Job Summary:

The Arizona Department of Administration is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Forestry Squad Leader to supervise and lead a ten-person forestry squad consisting of Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation, and Reentry (ADCRR) inmates. The successful candidate will be responsible for implementing forestry-related work, transporting squad members to and from the worksite, maintaining vehicles and equipment, and inventorying equipment and supplies.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Supervise and lead the work activities of the forestry squad, ensuring the safe and efficient completion of tasks.
  • Document squad member time, incident records, training accomplishments, productivity metrics, and receipts.
  • Recruit, train, and motivate squad members to achieve high levels of performance and productivity.
  • Develop and implement effective training programs to ensure squad members possess the necessary skills and knowledge to perform their duties safely and efficiently.
  • Manage the needs and concerns of squad members in a fair, firm, and consistent manner.
  • Perform and supervise forestry-related work, including carrying and using a 20-pound saw, felling trees, and thinning brush.
  • Implement the Incident Command System and coordinate activities with law enforcement, ADCRR, and DFFM staff.
  • Participate in safety and compliance inspections, respond to emergencies, and perform on-call tasks as directed by the Crew Supervisor.
  • Transport squad members to and from the prison complex and worksite, driving long distances in a van with 10 passengers.
Requirements:
  • Knowledge of managing an inmate work crew, timber harvesting, and brush removal.
  • Skills in leadership, organization, and prioritization, as well as timekeeping and expense management.
  • Ability to supervise, lead, and motivate crew members, complete physically challenging tasks, and hike in rough and steep terrain and inclement weather for an extended period.
  • Previous experience managing people and a valid Arizona Driver's License.
