Job Title: Transit Operations Specialist

Join the Brainerd Public Utilities team as a Transit Operations Specialist As a key member of our Transit Department, you will play a vital role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our public transportation system.

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented individual to assist in the daily operations of our transit system. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the third-party contractor's operations, verifying end-of-day fares, and completing ridership verification duties. Additionally, you will assist in monitoring and reporting third-party contractor staff hours, responding to customer inquiries, and representing the transit system in a professional and courteous manner.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist the Transit Coordinator in overseeing the third-party contractor's operations to ensure contract and regulatory compliance.
  • Verify end-of-day fares, including cash, tickets, tokens, and voucher rides, and deliver end-of-day farebox vaults to the Finance Department.
  • Complete ridership verification duties, including current and previous day's trip activities, bus mileage, transit times, cancelations, correct billing rules, and no-show riders.
  • Correct, verify, and maintain databases of previous day's activities, analyze passenger logs and customer information, and prepare reports for FTA reporting.
  • Assist in monitoring and reporting third-party contractor staff hours.
  • Respond to customer inquiries and assist the Transit Coordinator in addressing and resolving complaints.
  • Use RouteMatch software to dispatch, schedule, and route trips based on customer needs in emergency situations.
  • Conduct business in a professional and courteous manner with all contacts, including customers, coworkers, third-party contractors, the public, and other agencies working with the transit system.
  • Represent the transit system in accordance with adopted Transit and City policy.
  • Assist with preparing policies and training materials for transit operation.
  • Support the creation and editing of marketing materials to promote the transit operation.
  • Assist with preparing, soliciting, and negotiating the RFP for third-party contractors.
  • Assist the Transit Coordinator with preparation and submission of grant applications, budgets, etc.
  • Perform accounts receivable and payable functions to ensure optimal financial record keeping.
  • Report any accidents, incidents, or injuries to the proper authorities and follow all data retention policies and laws.
  • Assist with scheduling TAC meetings, developing agenda documents, and completing follow-up meeting minutes.
Requirements:
  • Two-year associate's degree with business management or related emphasis and two years of responsible accounting or administrative experience.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered as determined by Department Head.
  • Valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree with coursework in business or related emphasis.
  • Experience and/or knowledge of transit operations.
  • Previous dispatching service for another agency.
  • Experience with transit software, specifically RouteMatch, accounting software, and proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Working knowledge of mobile tablets or other devices.
