Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Crossing Guard to join our team at the City of Stevens Point, WI. As a Crossing Guard, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety of school children going to and from school at assigned locations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist children in safely crossing the street on their way to and from school, adhering to traffic laws and regulations.
  • Apply knowledge of traffic management signals to both pedestrians and vehicular traffic to ensure safe crossing within designated school crossing zones.
  • Monitor and report any unsafe behavior by children or motorists, including accidents and failure to obey traffic signs.
  • Document and report school crossing violations made by motorists, including accidents and failure to obey traffic signs.
  • Summon emergency help if needed, such as police or fire, and provide assistance to injured children.
Requirements
  • Ability to read and write, and follow instructions.
  • Ability to interact on a friendly basis with school-age children.
  • Willingness to work in all types of weather conditions.
  • High School graduate or equivalency.
  • Ability to pass a personal background investigation.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
Physical Demands
  • Requires occasional bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, and kneeling.
  • Requires ability to continuously carry up to 10 lbs.
  • May be required to lift an injured child to safety.
  • Must be able to firmly grasp a stop sign.
  • Requires distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more), peripheral vision, and depth perception.
Essential Knowledge & Skills
  • Knowledge of traffic laws.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques of assisting people across busy streets.
  • Ability to exercise judgment and decisiveness in determining when to safely cross children.
  • Ability to work independently and in compliance with department policies and procedures.
