Cameron County is seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Tax Clerk I to join our team. As a Tax Clerk I, you will be responsible for performing moderately complex clerical support tasks, including processing registrations, property tax payments, and simple titles.
You will apply your knowledge of laws and policies to customer circumstances and work to resolve customer issues. You will also report to a Supervisor/Manager assigned.
This is an entry-level job classification with a pronounced emphasis on customer service.
Key Responsibilities- Apply functional knowledge to analyze and respond to matters requiring basic knowledge of department policies and procedures.
- Process registrations and property tax payments, determining eligibility of motor vehicle renewals after reviewing scofflaw program.
- Perform tasks necessary to complete mail-in license registration, subcontractor renewals, and title applications.
- Process simple titles independently and record transactions, maintaining manual and computerized journal entries.
- Process financial reports, including receipts, claims, and disbursements, and perform cashiering functions on a rotating basis.
- Approve short-term payment arrangements within office guidelines and review delinquent accounts, contacting appropriate parties for payment.
- Maintain effective document, file, and record retrieval systems, entering data from document receipts into automated record systems.
- Compile information using computer systems, auditing data entry reports, and printing final reports for other departments.
- Perform general office functions, including gathering information and statistical data, creating databases, and generating reports using spreadsheet and database software.
- Write and prepare correspondence, providing direction and information to the public on procedures, forms, and regulations.
- Provide public with file information, in person and by telephone, and may act as the primary contact for assigned functions.
- High School diploma or G.E.D. and two (2) years of increasingly responsible office/clerical experience, including the operation of modern office procedures and computer equipment.
- Must have customer service experience and the ability to communicate effectively in English and Spanish.
- Valid Texas Driver's License and the ability to provide a no criminal record report.
- Must be bondable and have the ability to work independently.
This position is subject to a six (6) month probationary period prior to Civil Service eligibility. The physical requirements include the ability to lift/carry up to 20-50 pounds occasionally, visual acuity, speech and hearing, hand and eye coordination, and manual dexterity necessary to operate a computer and office equipment.
Subject to sitting, client/customer contact, standing for two consecutive hours, walking, vision to monitor, repetitive motion, stooping/kneeling, squatting, bending, and reaching to perform the essential functions.
