Position Summary:
At SunOpta, we are committed to excellence and innovation in process technology, which we believe can significantly influence our company's direction and competitive edge. This role will report directly to the Director of Research and Development (R&D).

Key Responsibilities:
1. Lead and support diverse projects in Process Development, Continuous Improvement, Process Standardization, and Productivity.
2. Collaborate closely with R&D Scientists, Quality Assurance, and Operations teams to devise and implement strategies for processing technologies related to plant-based ingredients and consumer products.
3. Demonstrate expertise in process design and enhancement for food and beverage products.
4. Cultivate and maintain an external network with industry and academic experts to gain insights into impactful process technologies.

Essential Functions:
- Provide specialized knowledge and collaborate with R&D teams throughout the product development lifecycle, from benchtop to commercial production.
- Execute process development initiatives to enhance product and ingredient manufacturing.
- Improve profitability of existing processes through automation, instrumentation, and optimization.
- Establish standards for product and machine capabilities and their implications on specifications.
- Offer technical support to operational plants, including the development of standard operating procedures (SOPs) and troubleshooting assistance.
- Ensure successful scale-up and commercialization of plant-based beverage and fruit snack manufacturing systems.
- Lead or assist with commercial trials and start-ups, ensuring compliance with process specifications.
- Communicate project progress effectively to cross-functional teams and senior management.
- Collaborate with Capital Engineering on the oversight of Commissioning/Qualification/Verification (CQV) processes related to capital projects.
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously while prioritizing effectively.
- Travel to manufacturing facilities or suppliers as necessary.

Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Biological, or Food Engineering, or equivalent experience.
- 2-3 years of relevant industry experience in food or agricultural product processing.
- Familiarity with plant operations and business financial data.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in aseptic beverage manufacturing and associated unit operations.
- Knowledge of food and beverage pasteurization/sterilization processes.
- Understanding of Continuous Improvement (Lean) principles and tools.

Travel Requirements:
Some travel is expected for meetings and site visits.

Work Environment:
Approximately 70% of work is conducted in an office setting, with 30% in a pilot plant or manufacturing environment. This job description is not exhaustive and may evolve over time.
