POSITION OVERVIEW:
Under the guidance of the Swim Director or designated personnel, the Aquatic Education Specialist is tasked with delivering swim instruction (aligned with the guidelines and levels established by the YMCA of the USA), ensuring safety, and engaging participants throughout the swim lesson program.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Ensure the safety of all participants during lessons and uphold all pool regulations.
- Arrive in uniform at least ten minutes before the scheduled shift to receive updates and instructions from the supervisor.
- Conduct classes in accordance with the YMCA of the USA Aquatic Program, making necessary adjustments for local conditions.
- Maintain the effectiveness of the lesson program by strictly adhering to established standards for progression and providing honest assessments of participants' skills.
- Attend all scheduled classes within a session; if unable to attend, arrange for a substitute and provide them with lesson plans.
- Encourage participation in the Y Swimming Lessons program.
- Assist the Swim Director or other designated personnel with administrative duties.
- Prepare the program area with required equipment and ensure all equipment is returned to its proper storage.
- Actively engage, orient, and assist all participants when not actively instructing.
- Focus on delivering quality experiences and engagement within programs, services, and activities.
- Maintain a professional image and ensure a clean and safe environment at all times.
- Work effectively with a diverse population, encompassing all ages, genders, and sexual orientations.
- Participate in all assigned meetings.
- Incorporate the four core values of the YMCA: Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility, while adhering to the YCM Code of Conduct.
- Communicate the mission and objectives of the Y to the community.
- Assist in other areas as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The Aquatic Education Specialist must meet the qualifications established by The Y of Central Maryland.
Candidates should possess good character and reputation; be capable of fulfilling assigned responsibilities; be open to training and supervision; and be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing as relevant to the role.
Minimum qualifications include:
- Previous teaching experience is preferred.
- Current CPR/AED/O2/First Aid certification (or O2 within 30 days of hire).
- Preferred Lifeguard certification.
- Successful completion and passing of the Y in Central Maryland swim test.
- Flexible availability, including days, nights, and weekends.
- Completion of new associate training (including Child Abuse Prevention) prior to commencing work.
