Established in 1970, we have been a steadfast advocate for the youth of Hawai'i, offering a range of services including youth outreach, independent living programs, therapeutic foster care, and emergency shelter for those in crisis.
Role Summary
We are seeking Relief Youth Counselors to provide support to young individuals aged 12 to 17 who are temporarily housed in our emergency shelter, Hale Ho'opakele. These youth are in crisis and may be referred from various sources. Their stay can range from a single day to over 30 days while awaiting a more permanent solution.
Relief Youth Counselors play a crucial role in managing crisis situations and guiding youth through their challenges. It is essential to create a stable, safe, and nurturing environment that encourages participation in structured activities such as chores, meals, quiet time, study sessions, and recreational outings. Counselors will engage in meaningful discussions with the youth to facilitate emotional processing, promote positive coping strategies, and establish necessary boundaries. Additionally, overnight counselors are responsible for conducting regular safety checks and assisting youth in starting their day positively.
Key Responsibilities
- Understand and accurately manage intake processes and documentation.
- Maintain a professional demeanor while interacting with youth, parents, and external partners.
- Collaborate effectively with team members and communicate clearly in both verbal and written forms.
Work Schedule
Relief Youth Counselors work on an on-call basis, with shifts varying based on availability. Shifts include:
- Day Shift: Monday - Friday 7:30 AM - 3:00 PM
- Weekend & Swing Shifts: Saturday & Sunday 8:45 AM - 10:30 PM; Monday - Friday 2:30 PM - 10:30 PM
- Overnight Awake Shift: Sunday - Thursday 10:00 PM - 8:00 AM; Friday & Saturday 10:00 PM - 9:00 AM
Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED.
- Preferred: 2+ years of experience or training working with at-risk youth or those who have experienced abuse or neglect.
- Preferred: Experience with youth involved in sex trafficking or sexual abuse cases.
Requirements
- Valid driver's license.
- Ability to operate the agency vehicle for transporting youth.
Compensation
- Hourly Rate: $20.00
- Retention Bonus: $500 after one year of employment.
