POSITION: SPEECH/LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST
The American School for the Deaf (ASD) is a pioneering institution dedicated to the education of deaf and hard of hearing students. We are committed to creating an enriching environment that promotes effective communication and fosters the growth of our students into independent learners.
LOCATION: West Hartford, a community known for its family-friendly atmosphere and excellent educational resources.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the guidance of the Assistant Executive Director or their designee, the Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) will deliver direct speech and language therapy as well as aural habilitation services tailored to the needs of our students.
KEY FUNCTIONS INCLUDE:
- Conducting comprehensive assessments to evaluate students' speech and language capabilities, and preparing detailed reports as necessary;
- Developing personalized education plans focusing on speech, language, and hearing therapy for children with communication challenges;
- Providing specialized instruction to deaf and hard of hearing students, including those with cochlear implants;
- Collaborating with educators and families to address the educational and communication needs of students;
- Advising on effective strategies for enhancing speech and language development, auditory training, and supporting staff in these efforts;
- Maintaining accurate documentation, preparing necessary reports, and engaging in professional development;
- Assisting in the formulation of Individual Education Plans for students with hearing impairments;
- Performing additional tasks as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
- Proven ability to engage students in meaningful learning experiences;
- Strong classroom management skills;
- Expertise in designing effective instructional strategies;
- Capability to assess and evaluate student progress;
- Experience in planning age-appropriate lessons;
- Competence in maintaining precise records.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- A Master's Degree in Speech and Language Pathology or a related field from an accredited institution;
- Knowledge of communication therapy methods applicable to deaf children;
- Possession of a valid Public Health License in Speech and Language Pathology;
- Certification from the State Department of Education in Speech and Language Pathology;
- Preference for candidates with a Certificate of Clinical Competence;
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) is essential.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
- Salary determined by the Professionals Union Pay Scale;
- This is a full-time, exempt position aligned with the academic calendar;
- Comprehensive health insurance and additional benefits are provided;
- A sign-on bonus is available after completing one year of service.
