Lead Veterinary Practitioner
Location: Eugene, OR
Job Type: Full-Time Regular
Job Number: 03923
Department: Central Services Department
Division: Central Services Administration
General Overview
The City of Eugene Spay and Neuter Clinic is seeking a dedicated lead Veterinarian to oversee the provision of medical services at our facility. This role entails significant involvement in service delivery at one of Lane County's low-cost Wellness Clinics, which aims to address the growing demand for essential veterinary services. The community we serve is engaged and appreciates the vital services offered by our clinic.
The clinic is a small-animal wellness center focused exclusively on the care of cats and dogs. We perform spay and neuter surgeries three days a week, with aspirations to increase to four or five days as staffing permits. Additionally, our wellness clinic operates four days a week, providing vaccinations, parasite control, and in-house rapid blood tests for the general public. Given our limited space, we have implemented a contactless check-in system and offer curbside services.
On an average day, our veterinary surgeon performs approximately eight spay and neuter surgeries, while the veterinarian on duty examines 20-30 patients during the afternoon wellness clinic. Our support staff assists an additional 20-25 clients for counter services without requiring a veterinary visit, and we handle around 50-75 calls daily.
We serve a diverse demographic and actively promote an inclusive environment that values different perspectives and ideas. We encourage innovative thinkers to consider this opportunity.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide veterinary care for dogs and cats, including pre- and post-operative examinations.
- Administer anesthetics and perform spay/neuter surgeries.
- Implement vaccination programs for pets.
- Address public inquiries regarding animal health and post-operative care.
- Contribute to the establishment of clinic goals and objectives, including developing policies and procedures.
- Evaluate clinic operations and recommend improvements.
- Facilitate staff development on diversity and creating a respectful workplace.
- Conduct physical exams for animals requiring official health certificates.
- Lead wellness clinics for underserved populations.
- Coordinate clinic activities with external veterinary organizations and stakeholders.
Qualifications
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from an accredited institution.
- One year of relevant experience in veterinary medicine.
- Possession of a valid license to practice veterinary medicine in Oregon.
- Ability to obtain a Drug Enforcement Administration Registration Number.
- Accreditation with the U.S. Department of Agriculture is preferred.
Ideal Candidate Attributes
- Strong knowledge of animal anatomy, surgery principles, and veterinary pharmacology.
- Ability to perform surgical procedures and diagnose animal illnesses.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment.
