Unit Details: Nursing Resources - Float Pool
- The float pool encompasses units such as 3P, 4P, 5P, Joint Connection, and psychiatric care. Occasionally, nurses may float to PCU if they possess the necessary experience or care for boarded patients in the ER.
- Patient Ratios: 1 nurse to 6 patients for Med/Surg; 1 to 4 in PCU.
Required Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS, CPI are mandatory.
Common Patient Diagnoses: Similar to Med-Surg.
Experience Required: Proficiency in Med-Surg, Telemetry, and Critical Drips is essential; experience with Chemo, Peritoneal Dialysis, and Trach care is preferred. Telemetry reading experience is necessary.
Drip Management: RNs are required to titrate drips. Common titratable and/or set rate drips include NTG (for chest pain), Amiodarone, Lasix, Heparin, and Dopamine (low dose for renal perfusion).
Charge Nurse/House Supervisor: Float Pool nurses may serve as Charge Nurses on Med-Surg units and typically have a patient assignment. Charge experience is preferred, and training will be provided for those interested.
Nurse Aids Availability: Yes, with ratios of 1 to 10 during the day and 1 to 15 at night.
Equipment Used: Includes CPAP, BiPAP, High Flow O2, long-term ventilators (only via Trach), IV pumps, sequential compression devices, and pulse oximetry.
Monitoring: 3P and 4P have 24/7 Monitor Techs, while 5P is remotely monitored.
Shifts & Scheduling: Shifts run from 6:45 am - 7:15 pm or 6:45 pm - 7:15 am. Scheduling is managed by the Director/Floor Manager, with block scheduling allowed based on unit needs.
Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend.
Holiday Requirement: Rotation with core staff.
Call or Standby Requirement: None.
Unit Assignment Process: Nurses report to the supervisor's office before heading to their assigned unit.
Dress Code: RN/LPN - Navy scrubs; C.N.As/Monitor Techs - Dark Grey/Pewter. Scrubs must be solid colors without embroidery or patterns. Closed-toed shoes are required.
Orientation: Includes general hospital orientation, nursing orientation, and computer training, followed by two 12-hour shifts with a preceptor.
