Job Overview:
The role of the Optometric Assistant is pivotal in aiding and supporting optometry professionals to ensure patients receive exceptional levels of comprehensive eye care. Working closely under the guidance of optometrists, this position focuses on enhancing the operational efficiency and effectiveness of the optometric practice.
Key Responsibilities:
- Thoroughly document patients' medical and visual histories, preparing essential clinical data for the optometrists. Conduct patient vitals assessments as required in the electronic medical record (EMR) system. Execute preliminary testing, including evaluations of visual skills, muscle movements, and pupil responses. Carry out advanced diagnostic tests such as Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), Visual Field assessments, and Diabetic Imaging. Maintain precise records and reports as directed by the supervising optometrist. Administer eye drops as prescribed and assist in therapeutic interventions like foreign body extractions.
- Manage incoming communications from patients, determining the nature of inquiries and triaging appropriately. Oversee the scheduling of appointments for the optometrists.
- Ensure that diagnostic and therapeutic instruments are maintained in a clean and accurate state. Regularly assess the condition of equipment and arrange for necessary repairs or recalibrations. Keep all instruments and medications for ophthalmic treatments available and sterile.
- Address patient concerns effectively, either resolving them directly or directing them to the appropriate personnel for resolution.
- Facilitate coordination of patient care across various departments, including optical dispensing, family practice, and pharmacy services.
- Adhere to all organizational policies, procedures, and standards regarding patient treatment and confidentiality. Perform additional duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications:
Experience:
- A minimum of two (2) years of full-time experience in an optometric or ophthalmic setting under the supervision of an optometrist or ophthalmologist, or successful completion of a JCAHPO accredited ophthalmic medical technology program, OR one (1) year in a healthcare support role with training in optometry.
Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Must obtain a Paraoptometric Assistant Certificate or equivalent within 24 months of hire.
- Registered Medical Assistant certification required within 2 months of hire.
Additional Requirements:
- Proven experience with ophthalmic instruments such as auto-refractors, lensometers, and visual field testing equipment.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a professional healthcare environment.
- Familiarity with optometric terminology and equipment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Three (3) years of experience in an optometric or ophthalmic practice.
- Knowledge of organizational policies and procedures.
- Understanding of basic science and optics related to optometric procedures.
- Familiarity with HealthConnect systems.
Notes:
- This position may involve working across multiple sites.
