Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Assistant Director, this position performs a variety of duties related to the repair, maintenance, and upkeep of the entire campus fleet of vehicles and mobile equipment. The successful candidate will manage a team of automotive and heavy equipment technicians, overseeing fleet services vehicle repair, maintenance facilities, after-hour calls, parts issuance, rental requests, and shop equipment. All other duties as assigned.

Key Responsibilities
  • 50% - Supervision: Provide effective leadership and guidance to a team of technicians, ensuring the efficient completion of tasks and projects.
  • 20% - Shop Management: Oversee the maintenance facilities, ensuring a safe and efficient work environment, and managing the inventory of parts and equipment.
  • 20% - Fleet Support: Provide technical support for fleet vehicles, including diagnosis and repair of complex issues, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • 10% - Administrative Services: Manage administrative tasks, including scheduling, reporting, and communication with stakeholders.
Requirements
  • Supervisory experience to effectively delegate tasks, set performance standards, evaluate performance, establish shop goals, and create actionable plans.
  • Experience maintaining customer relationships, handling complaints, and negotiating with vendors on pricing and service timelines.
  • Experience supervising automotive repairs, including identifying required parts and estimating repair completion times, as well as maintaining and operating shop equipment.
  • Experience ordering, receiving, and issuing parts, along with preparing and presenting complex statistical reports on labor, vehicle costs, and service completion times.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and local regulations (e.g., California Vehicle Code, Title 13) pertaining to motor vehicle maintenance, safety practices, emissions compliance, and refueling facilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, and ability to learn and operate Fleet Management Information Systems, reservation/dispatch programs, and train staff on their use.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and writing skills to effectively interact with diverse individuals, compose reports and correspondence, and negotiate services or agreements.
Preferred Qualifications
  • National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) related certifications.
  • Completion of a formal 2-year Mechanic/Automotive apprenticeship.
  • Five years of progressively responsible management and supervisory experience within a large fleet management organization.
  • Experience using reservation programs and dispatching vehicles.
  • Experience ordering, receiving, and issuing parts.
  • Skill to oversee and/or conduct training for employees.
  • Working knowledge of KFS, Agile Fleet, Tableau, Decision Support, AssetWorks, M5, and campus service departments preferred.
