Position Overview
This role involves the coding of inpatient medical records to support reimbursement processes and data collection for various departments within the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.

ICD-10-CM/PCS codes are utilized for diagnosing and documenting procedures for all inpatients receiving care within the OSU Health System. The coding process ensures that accurate medical record abstract data is verified in the EPIC/IHIS system prior to finalizing the patient chart.

Key Responsibilities
The primary duty of this position is to accurately code medical records and associated documents upon the conclusion of patient visits. This entails:

  • Selecting the appropriate admitting diagnosis, as well as principal and secondary diagnoses.
  • Sequencing diagnoses and procedures correctly.
  • Ensuring codes are transmitted from the Encoder Software to the EPIC/IHIS Resolute Billing system.

This role is critical for maintaining complete and precise coding, as well as for the assignment of MS-DRG and APRDRG, which are essential for hospital reimbursement, research, and strategic planning. The position must adhere to the productivity standards established for the department while maintaining an approved work schedule.

Minimum Qualifications for Employment or Advancement
To qualify for hire or promotion:

  • Completion of a CAHIIM accredited coding certificate program or HIMT program, or equivalent education and experience.
  • Demonstrated coding proficiency as evidenced by successful completion of the OSUWMC coding assessment.
  • Familiarity with computer-assisted coding and/or automated encoder systems.

Inpatient Coding Requirements
Essential:

  • An Associate's Degree in Health Information Management, coupled with a minimum of one year of inpatient coding experience across various service lines, including cancer, transplant, obstetrics, rehabilitation, and cardiology.

For Promotion:
Ability to code at least three of the five inpatient service locations.

OR

  • A minimum of three years of acute care academic medical center inpatient coding experience within an academic Health Information Management department, with service lines including cancer, transplant, obstetrics, rehabilitation, and cardiology.

For Promotion:
Ability to code at least three of the five inpatient service locations.

AND

  • Current credentials as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) from the American Health Information Management Association.

This is a full-time position with a standard 40-hour workweek on the first shift.
