Marblehead, Massachusetts, United States Town of Marblehead Full time
Job Overview

Salary: $21.33 per hour

Traffic Control Supervisors, commonly known as School Crossing Guards, are essential part-time personnel tasked with managing traffic at designated school crossings. Their primary responsibility is to ensure the safety of children while facilitating the smooth flow of vehicular traffic.

Application Process: Interested candidates must complete an employment application. Following this, applicants will undergo a comprehensive background check, an interview with the Chief of Police or their representative, and a physical examination conducted by an approved occupational health clinic.

Training Requirements: Upon successful completion of the application process, selected individuals are required to participate in an annual training session prior to the commencement of the school year. This meeting, organized by the Chief of Police or their delegate, will take place at the local police department. New hires will be familiarized with their assigned areas and may receive permanent or alternate posts based on departmental needs.

Meeting Objectives: The annual training session serves to educate new recruits about their roles and responsibilities while also refreshing the knowledge of existing staff. Key topics include:

  1. Reporting for duty at the designated time and remaining until the area is clear of children.
  2. Understanding the specific location of the crossing, traffic patterns, school schedules, and other relevant characteristics to ensure maximum safety.
  3. Ensuring children use marked crossing points and are not in the roadway when traffic is active.
  4. Confirming that all vehicles have come to a complete stop before allowing children to cross.
  5. Utilizing the provided stop sign effectively to halt traffic when necessary.
  6. Documenting any traffic violations and reporting them to the police department without confronting motorists directly.

New employees will receive a reflective traffic vest and a stop sign, with replacements provided as needed before the school year begins. All Traffic Control Supervisors are expected to utilize the equipment issued to them. Any issues or concerns will be addressed by the Chief of Police or their representative.

Conclusion: Ensuring the safe passage of school children through busy traffic areas is a critical responsibility of the local police department. It is imperative to have dedicated and compassionate personnel overseeing the town's crosswalks and school zones.

Compensation: Pay is set at $21.33 per hour, with no additional benefits.
