The Visual Storytelling Program at California State University Sacramento is committed to fostering a diverse learning environment for students with a wide range of interests in contemporary photography. Our program, part of the Department of Design within the College of Arts and Letters, prepares students to thrive in creative settings that demand collaboration, adaptability, and leadership. In an era where visual information is paramount, we equip our students to innovate and collaborate across various disciplines. Alongside our BFA in Photography, we also offer degrees in Graphic Design, Interior Architecture, and Design Studies, allowing students to engage in a comprehensive lower division core before specializing.
Position Details:
We are seeking an Assistant Professor who specializes in contemporary narrative photography, focusing on socially engaged and collaborative methodologies. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in teaching established photographic techniques and a commitment to community-oriented projects. The successful applicant will guide students in connecting photographic history and theory with practical application, while also contributing to our department's dedication to examining systems of privilege and oppression.
Key Responsibilities:
- Teach a total of 12 units per semester, equating to 4-6 studio-based courses annually.
- Develop curriculum for both upper and lower division courses that emphasize narrative photography and community engagement.
- Oversee student advising, recruitment, and part-time faculty management, while fostering the growth of the Photography program.
- Commit to excellence in teaching, creative and scholarly activities, and service to the department and university.
- Engage with the local community through service and scholarship initiatives.
Required Qualifications:
- MFA or equivalent terminal degree in the arts.
- Demonstrated professional creative practice in photography.
- Experience in teaching or leadership within community-based organizations.
- Evidence of sustained engagement with contemporary narrative photography.
- Proficiency in teaching essential photographic tools and software.
- Commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse educational environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Three years of teaching experience at the secondary, adult, or collegiate level.
- Experience with contemporary photographic capture and production techniques.
- Familiarity with digital video and time-based media.
