Position: Geospatial Analyst Intern

Department: City Manager's Office - Geospatial Services Division

Employment Status: Part-Time Non-Exempt On-Site, Not Remote

Compensation: $15.00/hour

Position Overview:

The City of Morgantown is seeking a Geospatial Analyst Intern to assist the Geospatial Services Manager within the City Manager's Office. This internship offers practical experience for individuals pursuing a career in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and cartography. The intern will engage in daily municipal GIS operations and will be expected to acquire and execute a range of responsibilities, including but not limited to the following essential functions.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Support GIS initiatives across various departments.
  • Develop maps for both print and digital platforms.
  • Conduct data entry and create geometric representations.
  • Execute scanning, cataloging, image processing, and organization of physical maps and documents.
  • Participate in field data collection utilizing mobile applications.
  • Regularly maintain documents and equipment to ensure optimal quality and minimize wear.
  • Organize paper documents into designated folders and storage solutions.
  • Perform quality assurance on all collected data.
  • Undertake additional tasks as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
  • Proficient in using a PC with Windows operating system and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Familiarity with Apple iOS or Android devices for field data collection.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving abilities and a solid understanding of geographic principles.
  • Willingness to learn and meet established goals and deadlines throughout the internship.
  • Professional demeanor and respectful communication at all times.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Comfortable working in both office and outdoor environments.
  • Able to adapt to varying temperatures and weather conditions during field data collection.
  • Indoor tasks may involve extended periods of sitting at a computer, while outdoor tasks require mobility and physical activity.

TECHNOLOGY & EQUIPMENT USAGE
  • Personal Computer with Windows OS.
  • Mobile devices such as smartphones or tablets.
  • Trimble Bluetooth GPS receiver.
  • Office telephone.
  • ESRI's ArcGIS software suite, including ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and ArcGIS Enterprise, along with mobile applications.

SUPERVISION & CONTACT
  • This position reports directly to the Geospatial Services Manager.
  • May involve collaboration with other departments for project insights.
  • Participation in City Geospatial Operations meetings to provide updates on progress.
  • Limited interaction with the public may occur based on project requirements.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education:
  • Current, graduating, or recently graduated student from a two- or four-year institution with a focus in Geography, Engineering, Landscape Architecture, or a related discipline.
  • If pursuing an advanced degree, candidates must not hold any current assistantship or fellowship commitments.
  • Relevant coursework in geography, GIS, database management, image processing, or related fields is preferred.

Certification/License:
  • Must be at least 18 years old and eligible to work.
  • A valid driver's license is necessary for operating a City vehicle, depending on fieldwork.

Experience:
  • Basic understanding of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
  • Experience using a Windows PC.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Prior experience in GIS projects is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with ESRI's ArcGIS software suite and mobile applications.
  • Experience with Adobe Acrobat and Photoshop.
  • Knowledge of data collection, processing, and exporting in various formats.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills for managing multiple projects.
  • Basic scripting knowledge in languages such as Python is a plus.
  • Ability to read and interpret various types of maps and documents.

Compensation:
$15.00/hour
