Position Details

Position Title: Culinary Specialist / Cafe Barista

Position Type: Temporary Part-Time

Preferred qualifications include ServSafe Management Certification or similar certification, or the ability to obtain certification. Experience as a barista is preferred, or a willingness to learn how to operate coffee-making equipment.

Position Pay Grade: B/C 05

Summary Statement: The incumbent is responsible for preparing, baking, and serving large quantities of food for a campus dining facility.

Nature and Scope: The incumbent typically reports to a technical supervisor and is responsible for cooking or baking large amounts of food. Responsibilities include the proper storage of prepared foods, inventory management, stocking, and cleaning of utensils used in food preparation. The incumbent may assist with the orientation of new staff and may help the supervisor in purchasing and planning menu items.

Principal Accountabilities:

  1. Prepares food items for cooking and serves food to customers.
  2. Performs routine cooking tasks such as baking, boiling, broiling, or frying for students and other customers.
  3. Manages inventory, stocks, and rotates food and related serving items.
  4. Cleans and sanitizes utensils and equipment used in food preparation; ensures proper storage.
  5. Stores leftover food in containers, labeling with name and date.
  6. Assists supervisor in purchasing and planning menu items.
  7. Performs other related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and equipment used in large-scale food preparation.
  • Understanding of cleaning and sanitizing methods applicable to large-scale food service.
  • Familiarity with departmental rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to cook complete meals with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to bake and prepare a variety of pastries and desserts on a large scale.

Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or G.E.D. and one (1) year of relevant experience in cooking or short order preparation in a food service operation; or other equivalent combination of education and experience.
