Position Summary
The Surgical Technologist plays a crucial role in facilitating surgical and invasive procedures by ensuring the availability of sterile instruments, supplies, and equipment. This position requires maintaining a sterile environment and proactively addressing the needs of the surgical team.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as the scrub person during surgical procedures, preparing and organizing necessary supplies and equipment.
- Conduct surgical counts with the circulating RN and ensure compliance with established protocols.
- Maintain a sterile field and ensure sterility by taking corrective actions as necessary.
- Assist in specimen collection and proper labeling.
- Communicate any implanted devices or relevant information to the circulator.
- Prepare for various surgical cases by understanding specific instrument and supply requirements.
- Uphold patient rights and responsibilities, demonstrating awareness of their age and understanding.
- Support CPR efforts as needed.
- Assist with the cleaning of the surgical area and instruments pre- and post-procedure.
- Adhere to the core principles and practices outlined by Bon Secours Mercy Health.
- Engage in ongoing education and competency verification.
- Utilize resources responsibly to promote financial accountability and performance improvement.
- Participate in patient safety initiatives.
- Be available for on-call duties as scheduled.
- Contribute to the orientation of new staff and students.
- Perform surgical skin preparation and urinary catheter insertion as required.
- Exhibit flexibility in staffing and scheduling to meet unit needs.
- Maintain professional grooming and attire in accordance with company policy.
Licensure and Certification Requirements
Candidates must possess certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) from an accredited body, such as the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTA) or the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT). Additional state-specific certification may be required.
Educational Background
An Associate degree, Vocational Certification, or Military Certificate in Surgical Technology is required.
Experience
Preferred candidates will have at least one year of experience in perioperative or operating room settings.
