Job Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Respiratory Care Clinical Lead, Outpatient Associate Chief Nurse, and Medical Director, the ECG Technician performs electrocardiograms (EKG) according to physician orders.

  • Possesses knowledge, ability, and understanding to implement all EKG procedures to meet the needs of special patient populations.
  • Verifies physician orders, communicates with nursing units when necessary for order verification.
  • Verifies patient identity, checks armband, and asks patient to state name and DOB (ALWAYS RULE).
  • Thoroughly explains procedure to patient and/or family, answers questions regarding the test to alleviate and prepare patient for EKG.
  • Performs patient preps to achieve the highest quality diagnostic test possible.
  • Transports patients, as necessary.
  • Picks up EKGs from PAT, PACU, ER, PCU, and ICU units.
  • Assists areas listed above in performing EKGs when requested.
  • Ensures read EKGs are placed in the chart and scanned immediately pre- and post-physician overread.
  • Consistently ensures patient waiting time for completion of diagnostic testing is minimal for outpatients. If waiting time is more than 15 minutes, ensures patient is communicated with and given the reason for the delay.
  • Handles equipment in a safe and appropriate manner within guidelines and policies of WRMC and the Respiratory Care Department.
  • Completes tests and assignments within an acceptable timeframe, placing patient care as top priority.
  • Enters EKG charges daily and performs QA's for accuracy.
  • Meets full-time, part-time, or PRN work requirements according to department needs.
  • Maintains current CPR and knowledge of basic cardiac arrhythmias.
Job Summary: EEG

Under general supervision, performs prescribed diagnostic procedures requiring specialized knowledge and skills in support of the provision of diagnostic and/or therapeutic services to a specified patient population. Ensures accurate diagnostic results for patients of any age by graphically recording impulses generated by the brain, providing quality outcomes by performing electroencephalogram (EEG) consistent with department policies. May work in the inpatient or outpatient clinical environment.

  • Experience performing EEG and evoked potential studies.
  • Recognition of ictal and interictal electrographic patterns.
  • Ability to manage clinical seizure and/or other medical emergencies as required.
  • Experience or background with performing respiratory care or sleep disorder testing.
  • Prepares facilities in accordance with procedural requirements, calibrates equipment, and prepares supplies/materials as required.
  • Cleans and disinfects equipment in accordance with sterile procedures and standards.
  • Prepares patients for procedures as appropriate to requirements, explains procedures to patients and positions patients as appropriate to prescribed procedure, assists patients at end of procedure.
  • Follows prescribed procedure in the administration of EEG procedures, determines appropriate calibrations and/or techniques.
  • Arranges immobilization and/or support devices and selects appropriate devices or equipment.
  • Maintains stock supplies and assists in determining quantities for purchase. Performs general office duties such as delivering and retrieving studies, recording procedural charges, and enters charges for billing purposes.
  • May take mobile unit to patient's rooms or other settings to perform procedures as appropriate to the operational context of the specific position.
  • Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies, promotes continuous improvement of workplace and environmental practices.
Computer Skills:
  • Basic computer skills and knowledge of the Meditech electronic medical record. Technician can log on without assistance and navigate therapist and MPI desktops through the EMR.
  • Technician can enter patient charges with 95% accuracy and reconcile charges from the previous day.
  • Able to use current EKG machines and troubleshoot and report malfunctions to biomedical services.
  • Able to perform EEGs through current systems.
  • Able to apply basic troubleshooting skills or enter information systems work orders for computer issues.
