Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Planner to join our team in the North Los Angeles County Coast region. This role involves professional-level duties and judgment, requiring the ability to research, analyze, and prepare reports and recommendations on planning-related issues of minimal to moderate complexity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Land Use Entitlement Applications: Comprehensive experience preparing and reviewing land use entitlement applications for a California Public Agency.
  • Complex Land Development Proposals: Evaluate complex land development proposals, including Pre-Applications, General Plan amendments, Text Amendments, Re-zonings, Conditional Use Permits, Variances, Annexations, land subdivisions, and other development requests.
  • Development Agreements and Maintenance Improvement Districts: Reviews and provides recommendations on Development Agreements and Maintenance Improvement Districts.
  • Staff Recommendations and Conditions: Formulates staff recommendations and conditions.
  • Scheduling and Public Hearings: Schedules legal notifications and public hearing dates.
  • Presentation and Communication: Presents findings and recommendations before the approving body (Planning Commission, City Council).
  • Client and Staff Meetings: Conducts meetings with development clientele and City staff to discuss Pre-Applications and project reviews.
  • Visual Aids and Presentations: Prepares and manages the creation of maps, exhibits, aerial photographs through GIS and Adobe Acrobat, PowerPoint presentations, and other visual aids in conjunction with staff reports and presentations before hearing boards.
  • Internal and External Liaison: Coordinates with and acts as liaison with internal groups and committees and external committees.
  • Work Assignment and Review: Schedules and prioritizes work assignments, meets review timelines, and prepares review comment and approval letters.
  • Code Interpretation and Application: Assists in the interpretation and application of City codes, ordinances, regulations, standards, guidelines, policies, and procedures pertinent to planning, zoning, land development, land use, and development design proposals.
  • Research and Policy Recommendations: Research code-related issues as needed and makes new policy recommendations to management.

Requirements

  • Minimum Qualification: Minimum of 4-6 years of staff experience working in municipal planning and/or community development AND completion of Master's degree (preferred) from an accredited college or university with a major in urban planning or a closely related field; or
  • Minimum of 6-8 years of staff experience working in municipal planning and/or community development AND completion of Bachelor's degree (required) from an accredited college or university with a major in urban planning or a closely related field.
  • Valid California Driver's License: Possession of or ability to obtain a valid California driver's license.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Hourly Rate: $45 to $75 hourly; commensurate with experience and qualifications
  • Benefits Package: Benefits Package available including Health insurance, Vision insurance, Dental insurance, 401(k) Retirement, Flexible spending account, Paid time off.
  • Work Schedule: Part-time, remote, 20-40 hours a week, some meetings can be attended virtually but others may need to be in-house.
  • Potential Travel: Potential travel.
