About Us:
At Southwest Research Institute, we specialize in comprehensive testing across a wide range of vehicles, from compact cars to heavy-duty trucks and off-road machinery. Our capabilities extend to internal combustion engines, including everything from lawn mowers to locomotives. We also boast a state-of-the-art tribology laboratory that supports diverse client research initiatives. New hires will receive a $500 bonus on their initial paycheck, subject to applicable taxes.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct lubricant assessments for various clients utilizing different testing methodologies in accordance with ASTM standards.
- Perform fuel evaluations for clients across various test types, including both on-road and dynamometer assessments.
- Ensure safe execution of fuel and lubricant testing by adhering to established safety protocols and Environmental Management and Quality Systems.
Daily Duties:
- Operate engine test cells through computer systems for data collection to evaluate engine lubricant efficiency, fuel effectiveness, or engine longevity.
- Maintain communication with colleagues, supervisors, and project engineers regarding testing progress.
- Assemble and disassemble gasoline and diesel engines following specified testing protocols.
- Support operational equipment by assembling and disassembling auxiliary pumps and motors.
- Prepare and label fuel and lubricant samples for analytical testing.
- Utilize scanners for various vehicle makes and models; maintain testing logs, time records, and project documentation; perform tire maintenance; modify fuel systems for specific testing needs; disassemble vehicle components as necessary for testing.
- Carry out the removal and installation of cylinder heads, transmissions, axles, and fuel tanks; inspect utility trailers; perform automotive fluid changes; flow fuel injectors; conduct comprehensive maintenance on a variety of vehicle makes and models; assist with departmental project activities as needed.
- Input collected data into a computer database; perform routine maintenance on engines.
- Ensure a clean working environment and comply with all safety regulations and standards when handling potentially hazardous materials during testing.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Preferred qualifications include Automotive Mechanic or Certified Master Mechanic, an Associate's degree, or ASE certification, along with a CDL License.
- Shift work is a requirement.
- A minimum of 5 years of vocational or commercial automotive or diesel mechanical training or related mechanical experience is necessary.
- Proficiency in Microsoft applications, including Excel and MS Word.
- Overtime may be necessary based on project demands; candidates should be prepared for exposure to solvents, gasoline, diesel, and coolants.
- A valid and clear driver's license is mandatory.
