The Wildland Firefighter (Fuels) serves as a skilled member of the wildland fire team. The role involves collaboration with senior fuels management personnel, fire management officers, and specialists in the planning, execution, and assessment of fuels management strategies. Responsibilities include conducting field inspections and evaluations of prescribed fire and fuels treatment areas.

The incumbent will carry out routine field assessments of prescribed fire/fuels treatment sites, compile findings, and provide foundational recommendations to achieve program goals. A thorough understanding of firefighter safety, fire behavior, local topography, weather conditions, and fuel types is essential for directing suppression efforts and recommending tactical strategies for fire control, monitoring fire activity, constructing and patrolling firelines, and managing post-fire clean-up operations.

The role also includes preparing control lines for burnout operations and coordinating with aerial support for ignition operations. Regular project assessments will be conducted to evaluate the condition and presence of wildland fuels, collecting data on fuel conditions and fire behavior through various methods, including field surveys and computer modeling. Findings will be reported to supervisors and used to prioritize fuels management projects.

The role involves assisting in the establishment of study plots to evaluate fire impacts on ecosystems, participating in the development of plot characteristics, visit frequency, measurement subjects, and data analysis techniques.

The incumbent will draft fuels management plans following interagency templates, which includes reviewing treatment alternatives and preparing segments of plans to support fire management objectives.
