Job Summary

This position is located in the Department of Corrections (DOC), Facilities Maintenance Division. The mission of DOC is to ensure public safety for citizens of the District of Columbia by providing an orderly, safe, secure, and humane environment for the confinement of pretrial detainees and sentenced inmates.

Duties and Responsibilities

Performs the installation and maintenance of water and sewage systems, including the laying and connecting of pipes, and the installation of new and repaired plumbing and heating equipment. Works from building plans, blueprints, work orders, and drawing/sketches to layout work and personally performs the repair and maintenance of steam lines and plumbing lines/fixtures throughout DOC.

Obtains needed supplies and materials, assures that proper materials and equipment are available to complete each task in a reasonable time schedule, lays out work, and subsequently assigns inmates to specific tasks, as appropriate.

Provides on-the-job training to inmate workers, monitors their work, and ensures that tasks are completed to a high standard.

Qualifications and Education

Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision, knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, measurement and layout, ability to use and maintain tools and equipment, trouble shooting, and ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc.

Licensures and Certification

Journeyman or Master Plumber license in the District of Columbia, and Backflow Certification is preferred.

Working Conditions

Most of the work is performed in a correctional institution with and around inmates, adherence to institutional safety and prevention guidelines is required.

Incumbent is frequently called upon to work in excavations under adverse conditions, subject to severe burns and scalding, mashed fingers and hands, and injuries resulting from falling or rolling pipes.

Other Significant Facts

Incumbent is subject to recall at any time, required to work rotating shifts and weekends, and is subject to 24-hour call.
