QUALIFICATIONS:
1. State of Connecticut License
2. Graduate degree in specialized study for language/speech/hearing
3. State of Connecticut Teacher Certification in the area of Speech & Language pathology
4. ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence preferred (Clinical Fellowship Year supervision available)
5. Other such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable

REPORTS TO: Building administration

JOB GOAL:
To assist in identifying, mitigating, or eliminating speech, language, and hearing challenges that hinder students from fully benefiting from the educational offerings in a supportive environment. To deliver diagnostic, habilitative, instructional, and consultative services for students with communicative needs and disorders.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Participates in multi-disciplinary teams as a resource for school staff to support the development of a comprehensive program for oral language enhancement.
  2. Implements a therapeutic program tailored to the individual needs of students with speech, language, and hearing disorders through both direct and consultative services.
  3. Guides general and special education teachers in observing, documenting, and referring students with suspected speech and language and hearing challenges.
  4. Conducts thorough assessments and diagnoses of speech, language, and hearing challenges, assisting in evaluating their impact on educational, behavioral, social-emotional, and vocational development.
  5. Distinguishes between speech variations due to cultural factors and actual impairments.
  6. Facilitates appropriate referrals of students to Early Intervention Teams and/or PPT, as necessary for assessing student needs.
  7. Designs individualized therapy programs, classroom modifications, and accommodation suggestions to meet students' needs in the least restrictive environment.
  8. Collaborates with classroom teachers and other school personnel to implement therapy objectives, providing recommendations for the student's daily activities.
  9. Offers information and support to parents and families when appropriate.
  10. Provides professional development, consultation, co-teaching, and modeling techniques for educators and staff to enhance student skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing, thinking, problem-solving, interpersonal relations, and literacy development. Acts as a consultant on topics related to speech and language enhancement.
  11. Maintains comprehensive records/logs for each student receiving therapy and any school-related speech, language, and hearing services.
  12. Conducts screenings and keeps updated lists of referred, screened, and eligible students.
  13. Works with staff and families to assess the need for augmentative communication systems and participates in planning, implementing, and monitoring such programs.
  14. Collaborates with school staff to monitor students' hearing as needed and shares insights regarding the educational implications of various types and degrees of hearing loss. Assists in procuring amplification devices and in-service training for involved staff when necessary.
  15. Partners with staff and families to promote the development of language and literacy skills.
  16. Undertakes additional responsibilities as determined.
    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
    Ten-month year. Salary and work year to be established by the Board.
    Automobile travel necessary when assigned to more than one building.

    EVALUATION:
    Performance of this role will be assessed in accordance with the Board's policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.
