Position Overview
This role is part of the Defense Health Agency and involves providing specialized nursing care in the field of obstetrics.

Key Responsibilities
The nurse will deliver comprehensive and specialized care to both complex and routine obstetric patients, including antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, and perioperative care for mothers and their newborns.
- Conducts thorough assessments, formulates care plans, implements interventions, and evaluates outcomes for obstetric and neonatal patients requiring close monitoring for any changes in their condition. Utilizes advanced assessment techniques to identify complex care needs and adjusts care plans as necessary based on maternal and fetal status.
- Continuously monitors and documents the condition of laboring patients, including vital signs and fetal monitoring, and communicates findings to the healthcare provider. Recognizes labor stages and alerts the provider when delivery is imminent, assisting in emergency deliveries as needed.
- Administers prescribed medications, including high-risk drugs, while adhering to nursing practice guidelines. Monitors patient responses, documents findings, and modifies treatment plans as directed by the provider. Responsible for the management of controlled substances and ensuring their security.
- Assists healthcare providers in the delivery room, including emergency situations, and prepares the delivery area with necessary equipment and supplies. Responsible for circulating duties during Cesarean sections and other emergency obstetric surgeries.
- Provides post-anesthesia care, assessing and managing patients who have received various forms of anesthesia. Must be knowledgeable about common anesthetic agents and their effects, ready to respond to any complications that may arise.
- Educates patients and their families on various aspects of care, including disease processes, newborn care, and post-operative instructions. Initiates discharge planning upon patient admission and actively participates in multidisciplinary discharge processes, offering emotional support to families experiencing perinatal loss.

Performs other related tasks as assigned.
Employment Conditions:
- Appointment may require a suitability determination based on a background investigation.
- Must be eligible for a Secret security clearance for the duration of employment.
- Position involves interaction with minors, necessitating specific background checks.
- Compliance with seasonal influenza vaccination requirements is mandatory.
- Position is subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing.
- A medical examination and immunization screening are required.
- Must maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and certification in the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP).
- Shift work may be required, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Moderate to heavy lifting (up to 50 pounds) is necessary.
- Position is designated as essential during inclement weather and emergency situations.
- Uniform and/or protective clothing may be required.
- Trial/probationary period may apply.

Basic Requirements:
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Degree: A graduate or higher-level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited nursing program is required.
- Licensure: A current, unrestricted nursing license from a U.S. state or territory is mandatory.
