Tennessee Oncology is seeking a highly skilled Registered Nurse to join our team as a Triage Specialist. As a key member of our oncology care team, you will play a critical role in providing exceptional patient care and support.
Key Responsibilities:- Triaging Patient Calls: Respond to patient calls, portal messages, and emails in a timely and efficient manner, utilizing approved algorithms and pathways to assess patient symptoms and side effects.
- Assessing Patient Needs: Recognize changes in patient status and need for care, and address them accordingly, aggressively managing symptoms to prevent unnecessary emergency department and hospital utilization.
- Collaborating with Healthcare Team: Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to discuss patient care needs and develop effective treatment plans.
- Providing Education and Support: Provide clear education to patients and caregivers, including verifying understanding of instructions and plans, and counseling patients and families on side effects of medication and therapy.
- Notifying Patients of Results: Notify patients of normal and stable lab/test results, and abnormal lab/test results after collaboration with the provider on needed interventions.
- Applying Critical Thinking: Apply critical thinking and astute clinical judgment while evaluating patients, and encourage patient compliance with supportive and treatment regimens.
- Identifying and Accommodating Patient Needs: Identify and accommodate patient disabilities and limitations, and access resources for interpretive services and other needed accommodations.
- Adapting Communication Style: Adapt personal communication style to meet the needs of patients and other customers in diverse personal, professional, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds.
- Performing Administrative Tasks: Perform charting and updating of records in the EMR, and knowledge of policies and procedures associated with operational activities that affect patient flow, patient care, and the revenue process.
- Participating in Performance Improvement: Participate in and initiate performance improvement activities as requested, and participate in own professional development by maintaining required competencies, identifying learning needs, and seeking appropriate assistance or educational offerings.
- Education and Experience: Associates Degree/Diploma in Nursing required, BSN preferred, or 2-years of relevant experience in oncology and/or telephone triage preferred.
- Skills and Qualifications: Strong verbal and written communication skills, with ability to present information in an organized framework; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; ability to assess nursing needs of acute and chronically ill patients through technology methods; and ability to multitask efficiently.
- Certificates and Licenses: Current RN licensure in TN or compact state required, AHA/ARC BLS certification required within 90 days of hire if employee works greater than 80% of shifts on-site/in clinic, and current ONS Fundamentals Chemotherapy/immunotherapy Provider card or complete within 90 days of hire.
- Computer Skills: Intermediate to advanced computer skills, with ability to navigate multiple computer programs and patient/hospital portals simultaneously.
