Responsibilities:

Supervision:
  • Oversee the workflow of phlebotomists in the Specimen Processing area.
  • Act as Charge Medical Technologist in the absence of a supervisor or Lead MT.
Distribution and Transportation:
  • Ensure the accurate and efficient transportation of laboratory supplies, equipment, and specimens.
  • Adhere to all regulations regarding the processing and transportation of laboratory specimens.
Specimen Handling & Processing:
  • Comply with regulatory guidelines for handling and processing laboratory specimens.
  • Follow established protocols for accurate patient identification and specimen labeling.
Communication:
  • Maintain effective communication with all staff, patients, and their families.
Customer Service:
  • Utilize AIDET principles as applicable.
  • Participate in CARES training.
  • Facilitate proper service recovery for patients and caregivers when necessary.
  • Answer telephone inquiries in a courteous and efficient manner.
Employee Relations:
  • Collaborate effectively with all Pathology and NMHS employees.
Reporting/Recordkeeping:
  • Ensure timely and accurate reporting of department testing relevant to your area.
  • Assist in achieving departmental Performance Improvement goals.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation for instrument maintenance and quality control.
Education:
  • Support the training of students and new employees.
  • Engage in continuing education programs to enhance skills.
  • Stay informed about regulatory changes.
Regulatory Compliance:
  • Adhere to NMHS/NMMC Policies, Procedures, and Guidelines.
  • Comply with Local, State, and Federal regulations and standards.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Biological Science, or a related field is required.
  • ASCP Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist is required within 12 months of graduation from an accredited Medical Technology Program.
  • Valid Mississippi Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record are preferred.
  • Proficient in Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) is required.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills (both written and verbal) are essential.
  • Knowledge of and appropriate handling of biohazardous specimens is required.
