Position Overview

A Law Enforcement Trainee is a temporary, non-sworn role that involves participating in an extensive training program at a POST accredited police academy for approximately six months. This position is designed to provide individuals with the necessary academic and physical training required for future appointment as a Police Officer. It is important to note that successful completion of the academy does not guarantee appointment.

Training and Evaluation

During the training period, academic progress and physical performance will be closely monitored. Upon graduation from the Police Academy, trainees may be eligible for appointment as probationary Police Officers, contingent upon successful completion of all requirements.

Employment Conditions

As temporary employees, Law Enforcement Trainees are compensated on an hourly basis and do not receive the benefits associated with regular employment. Employment may be terminated without appeal for reasons including:

1. Inadequate progress in the Police Academy.
2. Non-compliance with departmental rules and safety protocols.
3. Unsatisfactory performance evaluations.
4. Lack of available Police Officer positions.

The City will cover tuition, uniforms, safety equipment, and necessary materials for the Police Academy.

Qualifications

To be considered for this position, candidates should possess the following knowledge and abilities:

Knowledge of:
• Basic law enforcement principles and practices.
• Traffic control techniques.
• Interviewing methods.
• Evidence collection and processing methods.
• Relevant laws and regulations.
• Self-defense techniques.
• Safe work practices and officer safety standards.
• Modern office procedures and computer applications.

Ability to:
• Learn and apply knowledge necessary for success as a Police Officer.
• Accurately observe and recall information.
• Act decisively in emergency situations.
• Prepare clear and comprehensive reports.
• Interact courteously with the public.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License with a satisfactory driving record.
• No felony convictions; misdemeanor convictions may disqualify candidates.
• Must be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident alien eligible for citizenship.
