About the Role:

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Wildlife Care Specialist to join our team at the Great Plains Zoo. This is a fantastic opportunity for an animal enthusiast to work with a variety of species, including primates, birds, reptiles, and amphibians.

Responsibilities:

  • Animal Care: Provide daily care for animals in assigned exhibits and holding areas, including feeding, enclosure maintenance, behavioral observation, training, enrichment, and health care maintenance/treatments.
  • Exhibit Maintenance: Maintain exhibits and holding areas in a clean, aesthetically pleasing, and presentable condition, including general maintenance and repair of exhibits.
  • Observation and Reporting: Observe animals for signs of illness, lethargy, injury, or dietary problems and report any issues to the Veterinarian, Area Supervisor, and/or Animal Care Director.
  • CPR/AED Certification: Be certified in CPR/AED within 1 year of employment.
  • Working Relationships: Establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and interact/communicate well with the general public.
  • Record-Keeping: Maintain daily reports, medical records, enrichment logs, and other records as needed in the assigned area.
  • Presentation and Education: Give presentations to guests on a regular basis (Keeper Chats) and answer guest questions about animals and exhibits.
  • Teamwork and Flexibility: Demonstrate flexibility, self-motivation, enthusiasm, and a team player attitude, with the ability to work weekends, holidays, and evenings as required.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree: Bachelor's degree in Zoology, Biology, Animal Science, or other related field; or equivalent experience and education.
  • Experience: Previous animal training and/or zookeeper experience, preferably in an AZA-accredited facility.
  • Certifications: Current tetanus vaccination and willingness to be TB tested annually.
  • Licensure: Valid driver's license and ability to pass a pre-employment background check.
