We are seeking a skilled Licensed Practical Nurse to join our team at the University of Iowa Health Care Department of Nursing. This is a unique opportunity to work in a dynamic and supportive environment, providing high-quality care to patients in the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Inpatient Unit.

About the Unit

The Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Inpatient Unit (1JPW) is a 15-bed unit dedicated to providing specialized care to children and adolescents (3-17 years old) with various psychiatric conditions. Our team is committed to delivering compassionate and evidence-based care, utilizing structured therapy approaches such as Dialectical Behavioral Therapy.

Job Summary

As a Licensed Practical Nurse, you will function within the scope of your license to provide care to patients following the plan of care established by the registered nurse. Your responsibilities will include performing technical assessments, administering immunizations, assisting with minor surgeries, administering medications and treatments, fitting orthopedic devices, and managing clinic programs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Under direct supervision of a physician, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, or registered nurse, perform technical, patient care, and related clerical functions in an ambulatory setting.
  • Provide patient education regarding diagnosis, medication, and treatment under direct or indirect supervision of the physician or as directed by clinic protocols.
  • Apply dressings, assess and document wound condition, remove sutures, assure proper fit of orthopedic equipment, and provide treatments according to standardized protocols.
  • Initiate basic cardiac life support and assist in emergency situations as needed.
  • Maintain appropriate inventory of medical equipment and patient education materials in patient examination areas.
Requirements

To be considered for this position, you must be licensed as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) with the Iowa Board of Nursing, or eligible for a temporary work permit. You must also have Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification and possess medical terminology knowledge. Public contact and customer service skills are also essential.
