Position Overview
The OB/GYN Laborist Role A is a vital in-house position dedicated to delivering safe, high-quality, evidence-based care to obstetric patients while ensuring the effective management of hospital resources. This role may involve supervising and educating residents and medical students when present. The OB/GYN Laborist Role A serves as the primary, first-line provider, expected to be readily available and present throughout their shift.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure the prevention of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality by adhering to and exceeding current standards of inpatient obstetric care.
- Collaborate with the obstetric care team, which may include medical students, nursing staff, resident physicians, maternal-fetal medicine fellows, and advanced practice providers, to identify and address any clinical concerns.
- Work with the charge nurse to manage unit resources appropriately, prioritizing labor inductions and cesarean deliveries as needed.
- Provide on-site obstetric care for patients lacking prenatal care or those requiring immediate attention due to the absence of their primary provider.
- Facilitate the transfer of patients from outside hospitals, ensuring all relevant team members are informed of pending arrivals and managing the transfer process upon arrival.
- Lead scheduled safety huddles and conduct post-event debriefing sessions to enhance team communication and patient safety.
- Offer clinical support to other OB/GYN attendings and advanced practice providers, including assistance with obstetric emergencies and surgical procedures.
- Supervise resident physicians in the management of obstetric patients, including triage evaluation and comprehensive care throughout the antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum periods.
Qualifications
- Doctorate degree from an accredited Medical College.
- Valid Physician (MD) or Osteopathic Physician (DO) license in the State of Michigan upon hire.
- DEA Registration in the State of Michigan upon hire.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry weights occasionally up to 50 lbs.
- Frequent standing and walking required.
- Occasional sitting, pushing, and pulling forces as needed.
- Frequent hand dexterity and visual acuity are necessary.
Work Environment
This position is based in a high-volume labor and delivery unit, ensuring a dynamic and engaging work atmosphere.
