This opportunity is for a Structures Estimator with a strong foundation in heavy civil construction. The role involves overseeing the comprehensive development of cost estimates for substantial civil engineering projects that include structural components, as well as potentially managing estimates for earthwork and underground utility projects.
About Us:
We are a well-established contracting firm with over three decades of expertise in the heavy civil and industrial construction sectors. Our portfolio primarily consists of projects for government agencies, which are typically secured through a competitive bidding process, including traditional, design-build, and CM/GC methodologies.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Develop detailed cost estimates tailored to the pricing format required for structural projects.
2. Conduct thorough research on pricing based on historical data and regional market trends.
3. Provide a high-level overview of project scopes to create summary estimates and control worksheets.
4. Engage directly with subcontractors and suppliers to gather pricing information.
5. Attend project sites, participate in pre-proposal meetings, clarify project scopes, and prepare Requests for Information (RFIs).
6. Prepare written qualifications and proposals that align with project owners' requests.
7. Assess projects for constructability and identify opportunities for cost savings through value engineering.
8. Collaborate with internal teams and stakeholders to formulate strategies and enhance project understanding.
9. Identify and engage specialty subcontractors and suppliers to meet unique project requirements.
10. Create and manage preliminary bid schedules.
11. Develop self-performed estimates for trades designated for in-house execution.
12. Ensure comprehensive scope capture from subcontractors and suppliers during the bidding process.
13. Utilize project plans and specifications to accurately define scopes of work, assign resources, and identify subcontracting opportunities.
14. Manage the receipt of subcontractor and supplier pricing to finalize our competitive bid.
15. Assess and manage risk throughout the proposal preparation process.
16. Collaborate with the team to finalize estimates in HCSS.
17. Create preliminary project schedules using Primavera Contractor software.
18. Engage in proposal development and technical writing.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management; Professional Engineer (P.E.) designation preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in estimating for heavy civil structures.
- Proven experience with estimating bridges, cast-in-place concrete structures, retaining walls, and other related structures.
- Familiarity with all aspects of heavy civil work scopes is preferred.
- Experience working with Department of Transportation (DOT) projects is advantageous.
- Proficiency in HCSS (Heavybid Software), Agtek, and Primavera P6 is strongly preferred.
- Experience with alternative delivery methods and technical writing skills is a plus.
- Strong organizational and prioritization skills with a sense of urgency and ability to manage multiple tasks.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including technical documentation.
