Guthrie Cortland Medical Center (GCMC) is in search of a dedicated and proficient Critical Care Nurse (RN) to deliver outstanding patient care in our Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
This full-time role operates on the Night Shift, requiring three 12-hour shifts from 7:00 PM to 7:30 AM, with a rotation every other weekend.
Our ICU team is recognized for fostering a secure environment and comprises committed professionals. With a low patient-to-nurse ratio, our staff can devote ample time to patient care while refining their clinical skills.

Role Responsibilities:
The Critical Care Nurse is responsible for providing patient care through the nursing process, which includes assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. This role involves directing patient education and overseeing ancillary personnel while upholding professional nursing standards.
Qualifications:
- Entry-level candidates must meet educational requirements
- Preferred: At least 1 year of experience in medical-surgical nursing for specialty units (e.g., ICU, Maternity, Psych)
- Refer to core competencies and unit-specific competencies
- Current NYS license as a registered professional nurse
- Current BLS-CPR certification required (or within the first 30 days of employment)
- For specialty units: Neonatal Resuscitation Certification within 6 months for Maternity; ACLS within 6 months for ICU
Patient Assessment:
- Conducts thorough patient assessments and documents findings promptly in accordance with nursing and departmental policies.
- Completes nursing admission assessments accurately and within required timeframes.
- Performs skin risk assessments and pain assessments as per policy.
- Monitors patients based on their condition and safety protocols.
- Records vital signs and patient status per established protocols.
- Identifies changes in patient conditions and communicates with the charge nurse or physician as necessary.
- Administers medications, IV fluids, and blood products safely and documents accordingly.
- Adheres to medication administration policies using electronic systems.
- Evaluates and addresses the educational needs of patients and families.
- Documents educational interactions and provides relevant teaching materials.
- Contributes to discharge planning from the day of admission.
- Ensures patients receive proper discharge instructions and follow-up information.
- Assists healthcare providers in procedures and treatments as per unit and hospital policies.
- Accurately documents all patient care activities in a timely manner.
- Follows infection control policies and procedures to ensure patient safety.
- Engages in professional nursing activities, including participation in committees and continuing education.
Employees may be assigned additional responsibilities as needed.
