Job Summary:
Ascension Saint Thomas is seeking a skilled Surgical Assistant to join our team in the Float Pool. As a Surgical Assistant, you will provide direct assistance to surgeons during surgical procedures, ensuring the highest level of patient care and safety.
Responsibilities:
- Provide direct assistance to surgeons during surgical procedures.
- Position patients to give best exposure for surgical procedure, using stabilizing equipment when necessary, while maximizing patient comfort and safety.
- Provide visualization of the operative site using appropriate method, including manipulation of tissue and materials, retraction, sponging, suctioning and irrigation.
- Utilize appropriate technique to achieve temporary and permanent hemostasis.
- Assist with body plane closure, application of wound dressings and securing of drainage systems.
- Assist in room clean up and the removal of the soiled case cart, supplies, and trash from OR room as needed at the completion of the surgical case.
- Participate as a surgical team member in the preparation of the surgical suite according to surgeon's preference cards with appropriate instruments, resources and supplies.
- Participate as a surgical team member under the supervision of a physician and/or approved Certified Surgical First Assistant preceptor.
Requirements:
- BLS Provider obtained within 1 Month (30 days) of hire date or job transfer date required. American Heart Association or American Red Cross accepted.
- Certified First Surgical Assistant obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date required. Associates hired/transferred before 05/30/2021 are not required to hold certification.
- The following Issuing Authorities are acceptable: NBSTSA, ABSA, and NCCSA.
- High School diploma equivalency with 2 years of cumulative experience OR Associate's degree/Technical degree OR 4 years of applicable cumulative job specific experience required.
