Job Title: Young Adult Librarian Trainee

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Young Adult Librarian Trainee to join our team at The New York Public Library. As a trainee, you will have the opportunity to work closely with experienced librarians and gain hands-on experience in providing exceptional library services to young adults.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist with outreach to community-based organizations, schools, and local businesses to promote library services and collections.
  • Co-facilitate group and family visits to the library to enhance reading skills and promote literacy.
  • Develop and promote collections and reading programs for young adults, including readers' advisory, staff picks, and author talks.
  • Provide reference services and resource recommendations using print, media, and digital resources.
  • Collaborate with the Educational Services Department to develop innovative programs and services for young adults.
  • Participate in collection development and maintenance, ensuring the collection is diverse, current, and relevant to the needs of the community.
  • Foster digital literacy and provide age-appropriate technology instruction to young adults.
  • Assist with social media content development and maintenance.
  • Develop and maintain the layout and appearance of the library space to ensure a welcoming and inclusive environment.
  • Assist with branch operations, including circulation, fines and fees management, and opening/closing procedures.
Requirements:
  • Enrollment in an ALA-accredited Master's degree in Library and Information Studies program.
  • Bachelor's degree, preferably with a strong liberal arts background.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work well with diverse patrons and colleagues.
  • Knowledge of emerging library technologies and trends in youth services.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Basic understanding of emerging library technologies and service trends.
  • Working knowledge of trends in literature, youth services, and the profession.
  • Experience creating and conducting innovative programs for young adults.
  • Bilingual or multilingual skills.
