About the Job:
We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Patient Care Technician to join our team at Northwestern Medicine. As a key member of our Observation Unit, you will play a vital role in providing exceptional patient care and support to our patients and families.
JOB SUMMARY:
The Patient Care Technician is responsible for assisting and supporting the Professional Registered Nurse in all aspects of direct and indirect patient care activities. This includes assisting with admission, transfer, and discharge processes, taking vital signs, and performing various clinical tasks as assigned.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Direct Patient Care:
- Assists with admission, transfer, and discharge processes
- Takes and records vital signs, including temperature, pulse, respirations, weight, height, and blood pressure
- Measures and records intake and output, including output from drains
- Applies cardiac monitors and oximetry
- Obtains EKGs and performs normal newborn hearing screenings
- Assists with phlebotomy and collects specimens
- Provides morning care, bed baths, and evening care as assigned
- Makes rounds of patients and anticipates their needs
- Indirect Patient Care:
- Maintains a safe and clean environment, including temperature logs and cleaning of equipment
- Collects and inventories patient belongings and completes charges
- Orders supplies and obtains necessary equipment to facilitate patient care
- Assures room readiness for incoming patients and checks designated equipment for proper functioning
REQUIREMENTS:
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- CNA Certification or currently enrolled in SON with basic clinical rotations completed
- CPR recognition by the American Heart Association
- Minimum of 90% correct on annual mandatory Health and Safety Training quizzes
- Unit-based recognition for Capillary Blood Glucose Monitoring
- High school diploma required; one year of college or nursing education preferred
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
A physical demands test provides an objective way to identify if a candidate can meet the essential tasks for the job. The testing protocol was established with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).
Job Role Requirement:
50 lbs lift 30 inch wide carry; 25 lbs lift 50 inch wide carry; Push/pull 50 lbs
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
This is a full-time evening position. The successful candidate will be required to work a variety of shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
