About the Job

The University of Minnesota is seeking a skilled Grounds Maintenance Specialist to join our Landcare team. As an Assistant Gardener, you will play a vital role in maintaining the beauty and functionality of our campus grounds.

Key Responsibilities
  • Grounds Maintenance: Assist with the care of the grounds and gardens on the University of Minnesota campus, including planting, pruning, and maintaining annual and perennial beds.
  • Turf Management: Mow, aerate, and edge turf areas, prepare lawn areas for seeding or sodding, and lay seed or sod.
  • Irrigation System Maintenance: Perform checks and repairs on irrigation systems, assist with start-up and blow-outs, and ensure efficient water usage.
  • Tree and Shrub Care: Prune trees and shrubs, operate a chipper, and maintain storm water management gardens (BMPs).
  • Equipment Operation: Safely operate ride and walk-behind mowers, skid steers, edgers, weed whips, litter lifts, backpack blowers, shovels, rakes, pruners, saws, and hand tools.
  • Cleanliness and Organization: Maintain a clean and organized workspace, including facilities associated with Landcare.
Requirements
  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent and one year of experience or 1 year of education in commercial gardening, grounds maintenance, or a related field.
  • Experience: One year of experience as a lead worker, with a valid Driver's License and ability to repetitively lift and carry 50 lbs.
  • Essential Qualification: Regular attendance is an essential qualification for this position.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Licenses and Certifications: Valid MDA non-commercial pesticide applicators license and experience operating a skid steer with attachments.
  • Skills: Ability to communicate effectively with supervisory staff and lead student workers on specific tasks.
