Responsibilities
The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
- Engaging in archeological field assessments, which encompass pedestrian surveys, shovel testing, site mapping, condition evaluations, artifact photography, and maintaining comprehensive, detailed, and clear notes.
- Utilizing GPS and GIS technologies or comparable mapping software to accurately document site and feature locations, and to create maps for technical documentation.
- Assessing and aiding in the evaluation of collected specimens. Processing field-recovered specimens and preparing them for specialized analysis at various laboratories. Identifying, labeling, and packaging artifacts for curation purposes.
- Managing related databases, forms, maps, and files. Inputting archeological artifact and project data, including artifact details, catalog records, field notes, and site records into automated systems and archival records.
- Assisting in the preparation of diverse documents by gathering data from files and reports, conducting library and archival research, and developing maps, tables, figures, and draft sections of technical reports.
- Employing topographic maps, aerial imagery, GPS, and compass for navigation in challenging and remote terrains under various weather conditions.
- Executing excavation and testing of archeological sites, ensuring meticulous recovery and documentation of sample materials.
Area Information:
The Amistad National Recreation Area, located along the United States-Mexico border, is renowned for its exceptional year-round water-based recreational activities, including boating, fishing, swimming, scuba diving, and water-skiing. The area also offers opportunities for picnicking, camping, and hunting. Established in 1969, the Amistad Dam created a reservoir at the convergence of the Rio Grande, Devils, and Pecos rivers. This region is not only rich in recreational opportunities but also in archeological significance and rock art, hosting a diverse array of flora and fauna. The nearest urban center is Del Rio, Texas, which provides all necessary amenities.
Conditions of Employment
- U.S. Citizenship is required.
- Appointment is subject to a background investigation and favorable adjudication.
- Compliance with the Selective Service Registration Act is required for males.
- Participation in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program is mandatory.
- A drug test is required, with a negative result necessary prior to appointment. This position is also subject to random drug testing.
- Completion of a Department of Interior Motorboat Operator Certification Course is required.
- Operation of a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of official duties is necessary. Prior to operating a motor vehicle for the first time, and annually thereafter, you must certify possession of a valid State-issued driver's license.
- Compliance with National Park Service uniform standards is required, and a uniform allowance will be provided.
- Availability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime may be necessary.
- New employees or supervisors in the Federal government must complete a one-year probationary period.
- Overnight travel away from home may be required up to once per month.
- Training and maintenance of a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority may be necessary.
Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement unless otherwise stated. Credit will be given for all relevant experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume must clearly outline the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, including starting and ending dates of employment, and the total number of hours worked.
To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following:
- SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: One year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service. This experience should include conducting work in support of historic preservation, including archaeological inventory and monitoring, writing survey and excavation reports, and using GPS and GIS to record archaeological sites.
- EDUCATION: One year of graduate-level education directly related to the position.
- COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: An equivalent combination of education and experience.
Volunteer Experience: Experience includes both paid and unpaid work, including volunteer activities through National Service programs and other organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training that translates directly to paid employment.
