Job Responsibilities
The Commonwealth of Virginia's Department of Forensic Science (DFS) is in search of a skilled professional to oversee technical personnel and manage the daily functions of the Latent Prints Section. This role includes the oversight of the section's workload and ensuring adherence to accreditation requirements, alongside state and departmental regulations.
The Section Supervisor will conduct thorough scientific evaluations on various types of evidence submitted by law enforcement agencies. This includes the recovery and analysis of latent fingerprints, palm prints, and footprints, utilizing advanced methodologies, techniques, and equipment pertinent to latent print analysis.
Key Duties Include:
- Generating detailed reports of findings for the criminal justice system and providing expert testimony in court.
- Engaging with medical and legal professionals regarding testing protocols, outcomes, and interpretations.
- Training law enforcement personnel on proper evidence handling procedures.
- Occasional overnight travel may be necessary, with personal transportation required.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
- Completion of a recognized training program from an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited forensic laboratory in latent print analysis, demonstrating competency in the examination of latent prints.
- Experience as a Forensic Scientist specializing in Latent Prints.
- Familiarity with ISO/IEC 17025:2017 and ANAB accreditation standards.
- Proficient in fingerprint pattern recognition and the comparison of latent prints with known samples.
- Experience with laboratory equipment and analytical tools.
- Ability to provide expert testimony in court settings.
- Knowledge of laboratory safety and quality assurance procedures.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Capability to maintain precise records, analyze data, manage multiple priorities, and draw sound conclusions from analyses.
- Willingness to mentor staff and foster a collaborative team environment.
- Possession of a valid driver's license or reliable transportation.
Additional Considerations
- Certification as a Latent Print Examiner by the International Association for Identification (IAI).
- Experience providing courtroom testimony and preparing evidence presentations.
- Knowledge in the analysis of tire and footwear impressions.
- Experience with systems such as AFIS and/or NGI.
- Familiarity with Mideo Systems Latent Works software for latent print comparisons.
- Experience in latent print photography and technical skills with imaging software.
- Previous supervisory experience in a technical environment.
- Experience in forensic education or training.
