Weave is seeking a Search Infrastructure Engineer to become a vital member of our Data Platform team. Search plays a crucial role in unlocking access patterns to many of these data sets, which we aim to enhance further. We manage data for a vast number of customers on a daily basis.
As part of our talented team of developers, you will share a passion for distributed backend systems, data management, scalability, and ongoing development. Our teams operate as cross-functional agile units, consisting of a product owner, backend and frontend developers, and DevOps professionals. Teams enjoy a high degree of autonomy, with the responsibility and capability to act in Weave's best interests.
Your contributions will significantly influence how our customers interact with Weave, as you collaborate closely with a highly skilled team to achieve diverse objectives and foster our exceptional culture.

- Reports to: Engineering Director
- Design and develop search infrastructure, tools, and experiences that enable customers to efficiently locate what they need.
- Create internal products and platforms that empower teams to integrate search functionalities into their features and customer-facing products.
- Consult with teams to help them grasp common patterns, pitfalls, and trade-offs associated with search, guiding them in crafting outstanding customer experiences from start to finish.
- Build scalable and resilient services to support data integration, event processing, and platform enhancements.
- Contribute to the ongoing evolution of product functionalities that cater to large volumes of data and traffic.
- Write high-quality, efficient, maintainable, and testable code while taking accountability for the quality of your output.
- Mentor and collaborate within and outside the team, enjoying close interactions with others to help them grow by sharing knowledge and promoting best practices.
- Work in a cloud environment, considering the implementation of functionalities across various distributed components and services.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to translate product objectives into actionable engineering plans.
- Strong integrity, teamwork orientation, and collaboration skills to build close relationships across Weave.
- Proactive individual with a strong inclination towards action.
- 5+ years of experience in a structured backend programming language, such as Go, Java, or Python (experience with Go is advantageous).
- Experience in managing and storing large volumes of data, including terabytes or hundreds of millions of records.
- Proven experience with popular search technologies like ElasticSearch, Solr, Typeform, Postgres, and others.
- Understanding of distributed systems and the ability to build scalable, redundant, and observable services.
- Experience in gathering user requirements and designing suitable technical solutions, such as analyzing search histories to identify common user behaviors and developing supported search paradigms.
- Expertise in designing and architecting search systems and related techniques (e.g., result ranking, full-text search, semantic search, facet search) across distributed data sets.
- Experience building solutions on one or more public cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP).
- Experience in providing stable, well-designed libraries and SDKs for internal use.
- Self-motivated with a strong desire to learn.
- Demonstrated history of delivering complex projects on schedule and experience in enterprise-grade production environments.
- Strategic thinker with a robust technical aptitude and a passion for execution.
- Background in data analysis and visualization.
- Experience with NLP, embeddings, and semantic search in production environments at scale.
- Proficient understanding of containers, orchestrators, and usage patterns at scale, including networking, storage, service meshes, and multi-cluster communication.
- Advanced experience with SQL and large multi-tenant relational databases.
- Experience handling highly sensitive data such as PHI (HIPAA) and PII data.
- Experience with automation and container-based workflows.
- Experience managing and operating datastores and databases.
- Experience with GitOps, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), and configuration-driven systems.
- Preference for open-source solutions.
- A track record of creating clean abstractions and user-friendly APIs.
- Deep understanding of distributed data technologies such as streaming, data mesh, data lakes, warehouses, or distributed machine learning.
- Experience with Kubernetes or GKE and the Operator Pattern (GCP).
- A desire to push the boundaries of technology with innovative solutions.
- Enjoys working in a greenfield environment utilizing rapid prototyping.
