The Clinical Veterinarian is responsible for evaluating and treating research animals at UCSF. This role involves independently performing routine veterinary duties and directing animal health technicians in providing animal care. The ideal candidate will have experience in veterinary and husbandry needs of all research species, including aquatics. The Clinical Veterinarian must ensure that assigned activities adhere to protocols and applicable USDA, NIH, and AAALAC regulations and rules. This role also involves participating in the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) processes and oversight functions. The incumbent will provide on-call, after-hours veterinary coverage and train junior veterinarians both clinically and didactically.
Key Responsibilities- Evaluate and treat research animals
- Independently perform routine veterinary duties
- Direct animal health technicians in providing animal care
- Ensure assigned activities adhere to protocols and regulations
- Participate in IACUC processes and oversight functions
- Provide on-call, after-hours veterinary coverage
- Train junior veterinarians
The Clinical Veterinarian must have a doctoral degree (D.V.M. / V.M.D.) from a veterinary school accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association, or an equivalent degree. The ideal candidate will also have ACLAM diplomate (American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine) or Board Eligible status, as well as 3 or more years of related work experience. The Clinical Veterinarian must be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the State of California and have USDA accreditation. The ideal candidate will also have thorough knowledge associated with conducting examinations, prescribing and administering treatments, and advising owners and handlers. Proficient clinical skills are also required.
