Position Overview

This is a Non-Civil Service role within the Metropolitan Government of Nashville.

Responsible for overseeing facility access, screening individuals entering secured zones, maintaining a visible security presence in public areas, and monitoring inmates in designated recreation and loading areas.

Key Responsibilities

Facility Security Management
  • Supervises control rooms within the facility.
  • Monitors and regulates access to prevent unauthorized entry or exit.
  • Observes inmate movements in secured zones to assist correctional personnel and avert disturbances or escapes.
  • Utilizes surveillance equipment to detect security violations or inappropriate conduct.
  • Conducts searches on individuals entering secured areas.
  • Operates electronic devices to identify contraband.
  • Performs regular security inspections of assigned locations.
  • Communicates with colleagues and supervisors via hand-held radios.
  • Requests additional officer support during emergencies.
  • Documents unusual occurrences in incident reports and logs for review.

Public Area Security Presence
  • Deters misconduct and unruly behavior in assigned locations.
  • Attempts to de-escalate tense situations.
  • Provides assistance to individuals in need.
  • Administers first aid and CPR as required.
  • Coordinates with external agencies during adverse situations.

Delivery Coordination
  • Ensures security at the loading dock.
  • Conducts searches and screenings of incoming deliveries.
  • Performs security, safety, and sanitation inspections of work areas.
  • Operates delivery equipment.
  • Records and logs all vendors and contractors entering the facility.
  • Verifies and signs shipping documents.

Supervision
This position does not involve supervisory responsibilities. It operates under general supervision and typically reports to a shift Lieutenant for guidance on complex matters.

Working Conditions
This role involves minimal risk, with some exposure to disruptive individuals in public settings. The work environment is generally favorable, requiring standard safety precautions typical of a security officer. Employees must perform security duties that include relaying radio communications, monitoring surveillance, and managing access during busy or critical situations. Physical demands may include lifting up to 40 pounds, bending, and similar activities. Employees are expected to work various shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent and must be at least 18 years of age.
