Position Overview:

The Advanced Cytopathology Specialist is responsible for the microscopic examination of cellular samples to identify any abnormal or atypical cells that may be present.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducts microscopic evaluations of human cellular specimens following established departmental protocols.
  • Prepares samples for rapid on-site cytological examination (ROSE).
  • Stages surgical resection and dissection specimens for histological evaluation.
  • Considers the clinical history of patients, annotates significant findings, and provides preliminary cytological interpretations in collaboration with the attending pathologist.
  • Monitors pathology reports and engages with endoscopists and pathologists in cases of discrepancies between onsite and final interpretations.
  • Acts as a liaison between the laboratory and external facilities for expert adjudication of specimens, providing feedback to endoscopists.
  • Implements and documents all quality control and preventive maintenance protocols.
  • Performs quality assurance checks.
  • Contributes to various research initiatives and participates in the training of endoscopy staff and visiting trainees.
  • Offers interpretation of specialized test results, such as mucosal biopsy assessments, to assist endoscopists in decision-making during procedures.
  • Maintains a research database related to endoscopic specimens collected during procedures.
  • Utilizes telepathology for urgent consultations.
  • Employs digital analysis for tissue quantification and categorization in research projects.
  • Handles specimen receiving and processing.
  • Regularly communicates all abnormal findings to the cytopathologist and relevant patient caregivers as necessary.
  • May assume additional responsibilities including project management, teaching, technology evaluation, and overseeing new technological implementations.
  • Maintains consistent and punctual attendance in accordance with organizational policies.
  • Ensures compliance with all relevant policies and procedures.

Qualifications:

Education and Training:
Graduate from an accredited Cytotechnology program. Bachelor’s degree in a scientific field or Cytotechnology. Current licensure as a Cytotechnologist in the State of Florida, renewed biennially. Certified Cytotechnologist (ASCP) by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, renewed annually. Completion of research, ethics, and compliance training (CITI).

Experience:
Minimum of five (5) years of experience in an academic endoscopy unit, with a focus on evaluating over 2000 EUS-FNA samples. Proficient in ROSE assessment of cholangioscopy-guided biopsies. Basic understanding of statistical methods and analysis. Experience in teaching sample processing and ROSE assessment in educational laboratory settings. Familiarity with telepathology technologies and basic science Nikon software for tissue quantification in research activities.
