Overview of UMass Extension's Climate Program

The Climate Program at UMass Extension is known for its leadership in climate adaptation initiatives. Our mission is to foster collaboration, enhance capacity, and connect networks of climate professionals and researchers. We are committed to promoting best practices and sharing impactful stories of climate adaptation efforts. Additionally, we align climate research needs with the research capabilities of UMass and its partners, exemplified by our Massachusetts Ecosystem Climate Adaptation Network.

Role Summary

The Climate Program Associate plays a crucial role within UMass Extension's Climate Team, addressing climate change challenges faced by a diverse range of stakeholders, including government officials, natural resource managers, environmental consultants, community organizations, researchers, and Extension staff. This position collaborates closely with the Climate Adaptation Coordinator to implement programs and establish partnerships aimed at enhancing climate resilience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and execute collaborative projects and programs that engage local, regional, and national partners in tackling pressing climate adaptation issues. Organize and deliver educational programs, both online and in-person, and develop curriculum in partnership with the Climate Adaptation Coordinator.
  • Facilitate peer learning among climate practitioners, nurture ambassadors to disseminate best practices, and promote watershed-scale collaboration.
  • Evaluate the climate adaptation needs of stakeholders and respond through tailored initiatives. Develop assessment tools, measure program effectiveness, and communicate findings to partners and funders.
  • Provide research-based recommendations on climate adaptation strategies to stakeholders and staff.
  • Collaborate in the creation and distribution of outreach materials and publications.
  • Communicate effective practices in the field, highlighting strategies that offer co-benefits for communities and ecosystems, while promoting equity and engagement.
  • Support the Climate Program's activities by developing objectives, preparing reports, and identifying funding opportunities.
  • Represent the Extension at various organizational levels regarding matters related to the Climate Program.
  • Assist in supervising student workers and contribute to their training and development.

  • Promote teamwork, diversity, and inclusiveness within the organization.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the campus to align with strategic priorities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the mission of the College of Natural Sciences.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Three to five years of relevant experience in climate change adaptation; an advanced degree may substitute for two years of experience.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel for meetings.
  • Experience in delivering educational or outreach programs.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to foster collaborative relationships and facilitate discussions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a relevant field related to climate change.
  • Experience in education, communications, network management, or website development.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Additional Information

  • This is a grant-funded position with a strong possibility of renewal based on funding availability.
  • Travel may be required for local, regional, and national engagements.

Work Schedule

  • Standard work hours are Monday to Friday, with flexibility available.
  • This position may offer a hybrid work arrangement, allowing for work to be performed at locations outside the campus workspace.
