The Mission Enabling Products division, part of Northrop Grumman's Payload and Ground Systems (PGS) sector, is a premier designer, manufacturer, and supplier of spacecraft components and subsystems that empower and facilitate satellites across all classifications.
Our product range includes solar power systems, propulsion systems, bus structures, thermal management systems, deployable systems/antennas, and optical and laser systems.
The Integrated Thermal Systems Operating Unit is the global leader in two-phase thermal management for spacecraft, boasting over 30 years of expertise in designing and producing space-qualified products for various governmental, military, civil, and commercial clients (Legacy Swales Aerospace).
We offer the most extensive portfolio of thermal solutions in the industry, with more flight heritage than any of our competitors.
We tackle the most complex thermal control challenges in the spacecraft sector and possess the unique capability to take systems from concept through design, thermal component fabrication, integration into composite structures, and comprehensive system-level testing all on-site without subcontractors.
Our capabilities encompass the design, manufacturing, testing, and integration of complete two-phase thermal-control systems, including heat pipes (operating from -260 C to +175 C), heat pipe radiators, structural equipment panels, two-phase-loop heat pipes (LHPs), deployable radiator assemblies, mechanically pumped single-phase liquid cooling, phase-change thermal storage materials (PCM), multi-layer insulation (MLI) blankets, cryogenic cooling applications, and integrated thermal composite structures.
Our business is expanding.We currently operate from a dedicated facility in Beltsville, Maryland, with plans to transition to a new state-of-the-art facility (currently under construction) in Hanover, Maryland in late 2024 / early 2025.
Key Responsibilities:
Research, design, and oversee the development of two-phase thermal control systems. Adapt and implement new and existing thermal control technologies for unique and highly variable spacecraft, including some non-space applications.
Analyze thermal system performance using proprietary tools, thermal desktop applications, and manual calculations.
Review thermal system designs to ensure compliance with specified requirements.
Develop testing protocols and procedures to validate the performance of thermal heat transfer systems and ensure adherence to requirements.
Conduct, supervise, or oversee testing to confirm the performance of various thermal systems.
Collaborate with manufacturing, machining, welding, and product engineers to create manufacturing and processing instructions.
Partner with Business Development and Program Management to identify new opportunities and secure new business.
Develop and enhance new thermal control methods and technologies to broaden the product portfolio and stay ahead of evolving technology and competition.
Mentor junior members of the thermal technology team.Basic Qualifications:
14+ years of direct mechanical/aerospace engineering experience with a Bachelor of Science degree in a relevant STEM discipline; 12+ years with a Master's degree; or 9+ years with a PhD.
Fundamental understanding of thermal system designs.
Proven ability to apply fundamental physics principles to comprehend and resolve problems within applications, generate theoretical models of proposed solutions to create predictions, and ultimately correlate model predictions with physical hardware testing.
Ability to obtain a security clearance.Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with two-phase thermal control systems.
Graduate or PhD level education in thermodynamics, physics, and/or fluid mechanics.
Aerospace hardware manufacturing and/or testing experience.
Salary Range:
$149,900 - $224,900
The above salary range serves as a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers various factors when determining base salary offers, including the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills, and current market conditions.
Additionally, Northrop Grumman offers a variety of benefits, including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plans, company-paid holidays, and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
