Role Responsibilities
The Respiratory Therapist is responsible for coordinating and delivering high-quality, patient-focused respiratory care in alignment with departmental requirements and the standards of practice relevant to the state and specialty. As an integral member of the patient care team, the Respiratory Therapist conducts various diagnostic tests and therapeutic procedures while monitoring patients who are on both invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Conducting and documenting patient assessments, including breath sounds, airway integrity, and cuff pressure, as well as performing diagnostic tests to determine the necessity and effectiveness of respiratory therapy.
- Administering respiratory therapies, such as oxygen delivery, aerosol treatments, and chest physiotherapy.
- Assisting with the placement of artificial airways and managing mechanical ventilation.
- Monitoring patient responses to therapy and notifying healthcare providers of any adverse reactions, intervening as necessary.
- Facilitating the transport of patients who require ventilatory support.
- Responding to emergency situations to ensure airway security and adequate ventilation during resuscitation efforts.
Qualifications Required:
- Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification or instructor certification must be obtained within 30 days of employment.
- Associate Degree or completion of a Vocational School program.
- State Registered Respiratory Therapist or State Certified Respiratory Therapy Technician credentials.
