The Principal Engineer for Instrumentation and Control Systems (ICS) serves as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) within the LNG Operations Service Team, delivering specialized technical knowledge to Sempra Infrastructure's operational facilities and projects in development.
As a vital member of a collaborative service team, the Principal Engineer ICS SME is expected to comprehend the integrated LNG liquefaction value chain and adeptly navigate the operational constraints of facilities. Utilizing their expertise, they will facilitate, support, assess, troubleshoot, enhance, and innovate, thereby driving Operational Excellence across Sempra Infrastructure's LNG assets.
Key areas of specialization encompass DCS systems, PLCs, Operator Training Simulators (OTS), and hazard mitigation strategies for process safety, including software updates and enhancements. A comprehensive understanding of field equipment interface systems, their maintenance and troubleshooting, UPS systems, telecommunication frameworks, security access, CCTV, and hazard detection and control systems is essential. The role also involves assisting in turnaround planning and effectively communicating this expertise to a diverse workforce within a customer-focused shared services organization supporting the commercial objectives of a premier LNG export operation.
Key Duties
- Act as the leading authority on all Instrument and Control Systems issues for the organization. Provide technical guidance as an ICS Engineer expert resource to operational facilities and Sempra Infrastructure management. Ensure the maintenance, enhancement, and optimization of the OTS. Observe and evaluate operational facilities, offering unique insights and developing solutions to challenges encountered.
- Review, troubleshoot, and devise strategies for managing Historian and HMI systems.
- Assess and troubleshoot complex architectures of DCS, PLC, and other control systems.
- Provide expertise in hazard detection systems, including fire and gas safety measures.
- Specify and troubleshoot field devices interfacing with control systems, particularly for rotating equipment such as turbine systems.
- Evaluate and recommend security access and monitoring systems, including intrusion detection, CCTV, and visitor access protocols.
- Investigate outlier events, including unexpected trips and alarms.
- Ensure continuous safety, reliability, and production during software upgrades and patching by developing best practices and procedures to assess associated risks and mitigation strategies, effectively communicating these risks to plant management.
- Provide technical training support for operations, recommending upgrades and improvements related to ICS, telecommunications, and security systems.
- Conduct reviews and audits of P&IDs, hazard detection systems, and complex architectures of DCS, PLC, and instrumentation documentation.
- Monitor and identify cybersecurity risks, understanding UPS control systems and their operational capabilities.
- Plan and implement technical training support for operations and maintenance related to ICS, telecommunications, and security systems. Promote the adoption of Best Practices across operational facilities, including effective safe work practices.
- Contribute to the development of Sempra Infrastructure LNG and associated assets, participating in Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) teams.
- Perform additional duties as assigned (limited to 5% of responsibilities).
Essential Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Instrument Engineering, Control Systems/Automation, or Electrical Engineering.
- 12+ years of experience in the petrochemical sector, with a minimum of 4 years specializing in Instrument and Control Systems for large machinery.
- Willingness to travel to facilities outside the United States.
- Familiarity with industry trade groups and organizations, monitoring events and trends impacting Sempra Infrastructure LNG assets.
- Thorough knowledge of industry codes (IEEE, IEC, NFPA, ASTM) and regulations (FERC, PHMSA), providing guidance on their application.
- Understanding of operational and commercial dynamics of LNG facilities.
- In-depth knowledge of construction techniques and practices within the energy, natural gas, and petroleum sectors.
- Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently while achieving corporate and project objectives.
- Strong interpersonal skills to engage with a diverse range of individuals professionally.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Experience in coaching and mentoring junior engineers.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Master's degree in Engineering, Business, or a related field.
- 10+ years of experience in a plant environment.
