Key Responsibilities
  • Health Services:
    • Develop and implement school health standards, policies, and procedures.
    • Conduct nursing assessments of students, including immunization, tuberculosis, and lead exposure status.
    • Provide screenings for vision, hearing, dental, and scoliosis, as per State of RI School Health Regulations.
    • Offer individualized nursing care and interventions for students with urgent health concerns.
    • Manage students with chronic or ongoing health problems, including administration of medications in school.
    • Collaborate with community health providers to address health issues and provide referrals as needed.
  • School Health Environment:
    • Assess the school physical facilities and activities for safety features and hazards.
    • Monitor and report school-related injuries and illnesses.
    • Promote control of communicable diseases and maintain first aid kits for school field trips.
    • Collaborate with school staff to address health issues affecting students and staff.
  • Health Education:
    • Participate in health curriculum planning and evaluation, in accordance with RI Educational Standards for teaching Health.
    • Provide individual and class health instruction for students, as needed.
    • Serve as a health information resource and consultant for teachers and clinicians.
Requirements
  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact agreement.
  • Current license to practice professional nursing in RI.
  • Experience in nursing, preferably in a school setting or with children and adolescents.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work in a high-stress environment and maintain a positive, non-judgmental attitude.
  • Knowledge of psychiatric, behavioral, and developmental conditions in children and adolescents.
  • Basic computer skills.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements

The School Nurse will work in an alternative school setting, requiring standing, walking, and occasional lifting of students. A strong background and experience working with students with various emotional and behavioral disorders, as well as developmental disabilities, is desired.
