Physician Assistant

The Carrier Clinic Admissions Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner performs timely medical clearance reviews for all patients referred to Blake Recovery Center and Carrier Clinic. This role assures all patients who present at Carrier's Admissions Department are appropriately evaluated and treated. The successful candidate will complete psychiatric history and mental status evaluations on patients and assign them to the appropriate level of care. Schedule is 3-11pm, with weekends and holidays as needed. A minimum of one year of psychiatry experience prescribing medications is required.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform medical clearances via telephone and document reviews for pre-screening for medical conditions and infectious diseases to determine if further information and/or stabilization is required before accepting the patient for evaluation or transfer from another facility.
- Provide emergency psychiatric and medical treatment to walk-ins, patients, residents, staff, students, and employees, following all EMTALA regulations and Carrier's policies related to EMTALA.
- Complete admission evaluations, assessments of strengths and assets, mental health status, and determine psychiatric and medical diagnoses.
- Complete initial treatment planning, including medication orders, status, laboratory tests, diets, etc.
- Complete all documentation as required.
- Respond to Utilization Management and document requests efficiently and timely.
- Consult with the Nursing Director/Supervisor as needed regarding bed availability and/or acuity.
- Participate in departmental performance improvement projects and protocols.
- Document unusual incidents and complete all incident reporting requirements.
- EMR documentation for patients requiring special monitoring, e.g., suicide precautions, seclusion, or restraints.
- Contact family/significant others as needed.
- Contact referral and managed care resources as needed.
- Participate in Medical Staff Meetings at the request of the Chief Medical Officer.
- Act as Carrier's professional representative to the community and referring agencies as requested.
- APNs adhere to Collaboration Agreement.
- Be available throughout the shift at all times and respond to calls/pages.
- Adhere to timekeeping and payroll policies.
- Perform other duties and/or projects as assigned.
- Adhere to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
Qualifications:
Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
- Graduate of an approved APN Program or successful completion of an approved physician's assistant program, accredited by the AMA Council on Medical Education.
- Interact well with patients, visitors, and staff, responding promptly to inquiries with tact and sensitivity.
- Demonstrate a courteous, cooperative, pleasant, and positive attitude.
- Maintain strict standards of confidentiality.
- Maintain membership in professional organizations.
- Exhibit excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Be proficient in computer skills, including Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.
- Have a minimum of one year of psychiatry experience prescribing medications.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
- Advance Practice Nurse License or Physician Assistant License.
- Adult Psychiatric & Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialist Certification or Adult Psychiatric & Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Certification.
- AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification or completed within the first 90 days of employment.
