Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Clinical Laboratory Technologist to join our team at MidHudson Regional Hospital. As a Clinical Laboratory Technologist, you will be responsible for performing routine and special analysis of specimens, recognizing and documenting abnormal and inconsistent test results, and following established protocol for quality assurance and quality improvement.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform routine and special analysis of specimens according to established protocol.
  • Recognize and document abnormal and inconsistent test results and independently follow through according to established protocol.
  • Follow protocol for critical/panic values.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of test theory and correlate lab data.
  • Review co-worker's reports where appropriate, for release.
  • Consistently seek/consult other departments to assist in workflow efficiencies when immediate tasks are completed in order to expedite patient care.
  • Maintain competencies in a minimum of two clinical departments and perform testing/procedures independently with minimal supervision.
  • Analyze quality control material in accordance with laboratory policy.
  • Follow through independently with corrective action and documentation and respond appropriately to correct problems. Proactively alert supervisors to quality control trends and other potential problems.
  • Actively participate in department-based Quality Improvement projects.
  • Assist supervisor with test method comparisons, correlation studies or other validation studies for new or current test systems.
  • Assist supervisor in collating data, material, etc. for quality management program.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance of all departmental equipment/instruments.
  • Maintain department inventory, communicating effectively with Supervisor or designee when inventory is low, in order to assure continuity of patient testing.
  • Recognize instrument malfunction and/or reagent problems and is able to perform problem-solving/troubleshooting measures.
  • Is able to troubleshoot and repair instrumentation problems. Independently initiate communication with service/vendor in order to problem solve instrumentation/equipment.
  • Act independently to determine alternative testing procedures.
  • Act as a technical resource for students, technical and phlebotomy staff, physicians and other professional staff.
  • Assist phlebotomists in problem-solving patient and/or specimen issues.
  • Participate in the continuing education programs offered in the respective department, cross-trained departments and through the hospital. Expand knowledge in the field through continuing education; e.g., seminars, outside programs, on-line programs.
  • Interface with clinicians and answer questions/concerns related to laboratory tests, procedures, collection information, etc.
  • Support other technical staff in identifying instrument/specimen issues, reporting of specialized test results, etc.
  • Report to Codes as required within established time frame and follows all technical and administrative protocol.
  • Accurately correlate orders with specimens ensuring proper identification of specimen and follows up with unit as needed.
  • Assess quality and appropriateness (QNS, clotted, labeling, proper collection/container, etc.) of specimens and follows through accordingly (redraw, communicates/notifies nursing unit, etc.).
  • Is able to demonstrate effective utilization of computer systems to perform testing for patient care functions. Identify/make recommendations for process improvements related to LIS, test analyzers and/or manual test methods.
  • Assist supervisor in performing a special project or initiative.
  • Demonstrate sound, independent judgment, effectively and professionally resolving problem situations.
  • Oversee department/testing activities in Supervisor's absence.
  • Evaluate technical staff competencies, as appropriate.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Requirements
  • 0-2 years experience as a clinical lab technologist, preferred.
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or equivalent experience, required.
Licenses/Certifications
  • Either: (a) possession of a license and current registration as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist issued by the New York State Education Department; or (b) possession of a limited permit as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist or restricted license to practice clinical laboratory technology at Westchester Medical Center issued by the New York State Education Department.
  • Certification in a national accrediting agency preferred
